Publisher's summary

One blizzardy New Mexico night, Posadas County Deputy Pasquale picks up a toddler scooting his Scamper along the shoulder of State 56.

Yes, it's horrifying - a child apparently dumped out of a truck by his father. Nearly as horrifying is what unrolls while Christmas approaches after dad Darrell Fisher's arrest: a request arrives from the US Forest Service to locate a missing range tech and his unit last reported headed for nearby Stinkin' Springs, and the brutal murder of Constance Suarez in the border town of Regál, population 37.

The Sheriff's Department is stretched to its limits as its dedicated personnel juggle working cases and caring for citizens with their own relationships and family celebrations. The irony of so much wickedness at the holidays is not lost on anyone. Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman, heading out her door to a crime scene, reflects: "It would be a glorious holiday evening for somebody."

excellent continuing character development & plot

As a long time reader of the Bill Gastner & Posadas County books, I was happy to see this new edition. it has a good mystery plot and very satisfying character development continuations. some have complained there was too much personal, but as a main story line continued for decades - again, it is very satisfying and rewarding to peek into our favorite characters lives - to see where they are, how they have grown. the author has (almost) always moved the characters ages at leaps and this is no exception.

I was concerned to have a new narrator, but she is by far my favorite female narrator for this series! No one ever captured Bill Gartner as well as Rusty Nelson - although Rusty constantly mispronounced Spanish words (varying even in one sentence 😉).

I am left satisfied- but still wanting that next tome! here's hoping the story is not over.

Narrator

Not a great narrator for this particular series. Estelle being of Mexican decent. I guess I miss Rusty.

Ok. Plot and narration not my favorite

I don't understand why the plot had to take the direction it did. Just to make the culprit have to sit still for interrogation? l can't say more without spoilers. The narration was flat and dragged, imo.

As usual Stephen F Havel books come through. Enjoy one and all.

The book was good but but the reader was not a good match for this book. I’ve listened to all of his books and this is the only reader that I had a hard time listening to

Wish I had reread a Tony Hillerman novel instead

Narrator did a good job except for the glaring mispronunciations, eg. cartoid for carotid; San Crist-o'-bal for San Cris-to-bal'.

A disappointment

The story was OK, but I vehemently dislike the narrator. She completely changed the characters personalities. The story is pretty good, and the personal lives of the characters is just fine. I just couldn’t get past the phrasing, and what I considered misplaced emphasis of the narrator. I’m not sure I will bother with another audiobook in the series if it is done by this narrator.
