"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)
I checked out Pimsleur "Quick and Simple" polish from my work library... similar to this, it is an audio based program... Units 1-5 are almost an exact copy of "quick and simple", but the remaining programs take you from there. I take the lessons on my drive to and from the office (lessons are usually ~30 minutes) and best done when alone in the car. The program teaches you phrases which you repeat (often) in the context of a conversation. My Husband is polish, and is amazed that just on lesson 8 I am able to have short conversations regarding country of orgin, language, directions, meals, etc. If speaking polish is your ultimate goal - this is the way! I have struggled with other programs (including rosetta stone), but am excited to complete all 30 of the available Pimsleur lessons. I highly recommend this series.
Highly recommended! Great narrator. Gives clear instructions for learning pronunciation. Very helpful. It is good to listen to instructions in first chapter about how to best profit from the course.
I also have Rosetta Stone. But with Pimsleur I actually know what I am saying. If you want to start SPEAKING a language within a week or so, then Pimsleur is definitely it. My only con with Pimsleur is that there are no texts. I purchased this via Audible.
Thirtysomething writer, can't stand being read to, hate listening to fiction, discovered I can deal with non-fiction as if it's public radio
This is a good method to get you started quickly speaking and understanding a few simple Polish phrases.
It's very enjoyable to learn another language, and these phrases were a good and practical place to start.
The voices spoke clearly and it was well presented.
The only thing I wish is that each unit covered a little bit more content, or that more units were included in one book.
"Useful for US tourists"
Useful phrases in spoken Polish
It doesn't have one
The accents are good, I am told. Authentic Polish speakers.
Alone in Poland: an American tourist toughs it out
This reviewing format only applies to novels, not to non fiction books. AS a result I am not able to write the review I intended and feel patronised by the "tick the box" approach.
I would add that this audiobook assumes that the speaker is American, and male. There is not even an option for saying "I'm British" or "I'm Spanish". I find that annoying. Poland isn't part of the US empire, as far as I know...
I bought this to help me to learn some basic phrases to use in the nursery where I work with a Polish-speaking child aged three, whose parents have not taught him English. It has been useful in this regard though there is no grammar and no indication of how to pronounce written words, It's all based on the "Listen and Repeat" approach. I find that somewhat limiting.
Still, for a long weekend in Krakow, it would be plenty. I downloaded the next part, too, and got as far as unit nine. Then my little charge began to learn a lot of English from his playmates.
"learn to speak like you're Polish"
There isn't a print version, this course is designed to get you speaking, rather than reading, Polish
Each lesson is based around natural conversations that you quickly learn to understand and take part in.
So far I have used the Pimsleur language courses to learn Polish, Mandarin Chinese, German, French, Albanian, Hindi, Farsi and a little Hebrew. This one is as good as the others, they are all excellent.
You are advised to do one lesson a day.
My Polish friends have commented that I sound Polish when I speak with them, since using this course!
"Did the trick"
Pimsleur courses are excellent, the Polish course in no way diminishes the method, diminished only by the american accent for me.
"Fast learning results"
I strongly recommend any of the Pimsleur language courses. You are intermediately able to use the language. I have already learnt Hebrew and Swahili with them.
The 30 min daily lessons allow you to learn in an easy fast track. I can learn while walking to my work or cleaning my home.
