Sorry, but I can't recommend this to a beginner trying to learn Chinese. On the positive side, the two teachers (one American, one Chinese) are fun to listen to when they're chatting about Chinese culture. But the language instruction, which is only 20% or so of the tapes, is pretty poor. It's not something you can listen to in the car, because the instructors don't lead you through a learning process. They just say the words once or twice, and that's it. If you're just starting out and looking for something to listen to in the car, jogging or whatever, check out YoYo Chinese instead.
I grew up in Taiwan and was fluent in Mandarin as a child but have since gottten a bit rusty - this course is great in that it offers you the basics without telling you what you already know (i.e. the pronunciation and tones.) This is less of a formal instruction course and more of a Podcast format.I really enjoyed the hosts who are charming a funny and have great chemistry. This series may not be for everyone - but if you're an intermediate Mandarin speaker in need of a refresher this course might be just what you're looking for.
I enjoyed listening to the hosts, they were very engaging. I think that this would be very helpful if you lived in China or Taiwan, but if you, like me, are trying to learn the language in America, this will not do a ton for you. It was helpful to hear them discuss grammar and usage points, I really liked that. The culture snippets were also helpful. I really appreciated Victor's usage tips, I think they were very helpful. Unfortunately, I don't think I ended up learning much vocab as it wasn't structured well for that, very little repetition. I got a lot more out of Pimsleur, but it does cost a lot more.
Easy to learn Chinese! The two speakers are pleasant and easy to listen to and learn from!
I can continue to go back and keep learning at my own pace!
I thought this is very fun you get a lot of laughs.
a lot of laughs makes good emotions.
good emotions make great memories.
Have fun learning Chinese!
"Frustrating in the Extreme"
Scrap them and start again with an emphasis on actually teaching Chinese would be a start.
As someone who is attempting to absorb a new language i quickly found that i began to resent the persistent meanderings in the content away from the teaching of Chinese. I would not recommend this set to anyone starting out and there is far to little content for it to be useful to anyone with more experience of the language.
Voice talent was fine, content was lacking.
"Very poor performance"
This is very poor. It more like fly on the wall experiance of a couple chatting. I didn't learn very much at all and i have to agree with the other post that it's not for listening too whilst driving etc. At the really annoying accent of the Amber is the icing on the cake for the 2 star review.
