"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)
I will have to say that I was very skeptical about this program at first, but Pimsleur has definitely converted me! By unit 17 of phase 2, I was able to converse with a couple from Germany. Mind you, I do not have a
FULL vocabulary, but the couple said that my pronunciation was like that of a native speaker. Granted, I do spend more time than the program recommends per day and have had to repeat some units, but to be able to be understood by a non-English speaker after only roughly six months TOTAL (including this program and others) is impressive. Of these programs, I have used the Pimsleur program for about four of these months. I can speak better German than I can Spanish, of which I had four years of formal study.
This audiobook works great as a family foreign language project. We listen to it for a half hour a day.
It is realistic and simple and goes back to lesson 1.
He sounds like he is German and is pretty clear.
No. We just did it a little at a time.
I've had a year of adult ed German and so have a good idea of the vocabulary and grammar. However, I have a hard time remembering words for conversation. This program teaches basic conversational skills one might need when traveling to Germany. The repetition is excellent and each lesson includes review of previous lessons. I'm a visual learner so I like combining this program with the basic 'visual' knowledge I already have. Other people may do fine with just this oral presentation.
This program really helped me. It won't teach you written German but is an excellent way to learn how to speak the language.
I'm going to be traveling to Germany next year and want to learn as much German as I can before I go. I already have a long commute, so these tapes seemed like a great solution for me. Now that I've finished this first set, I'm definitely going to be purchasing the rest of these lessons. They were easy to follow, and I feel like I'm actually starting to learn valuable communication skills rather than just spitting back vocabulary words. It's too early to tell just how much I'll learn, but I liked my experience enough to keep going.
I commute 35 Km a day on my bicycle listening to Audible. I love it (both riding and listening).
I'm Brazilian and my second language is English. In about five days I followed this unity and I'm really able to communicate in German in a way much better than I could ever imagine. I know only a little, but inside this knowledge, I'm fluent!
"Easy to Use"
I found Pimsleur's German Phase 1 very easy to use and understand. The format is excellent. It eases you into the language and through continuous repetition plants the language in your long term memory. The repetitiveness is by no means tedious and the course constantly challenges you to think for yourself by forming sentences from the vocabulary you have learned. It does not overload you either with information but instead gradually introduces additional vocabulary. The tutor goes back on previous units as a refresher every so often which ensures that earlier lessons are not forgotten. I would recommend this method of language learning and look forward to starting lessons 6-10.
"An up to date method in learning any language."
This system of learning a language is very successful. It really works. Just do as the guide to lessons tells you and you will succeed in learning a new language. I did German at school, I am half German and only used German at summer times as a kid when we would visit Grandma (Omi) in Germany. I could understand and converse a lot less then. Now, due to the Pimsleur method of learning I have a confidence in really understanding and holding a conversation in German. Very, very highly recommended for all that wish to learn any language in the series of languages.
I have never learned German begore andI've learn already few vocabulary. Also, It's not to quick. I don't need to learn anything by heart, this methodology late you remember. Even if you've not listen to the audiobook for one week or 3. At least it stayed in my memory.
