Good Listen

Full of twists and turns and I enjoyed listening to this book. The only negative is that there is not a sequel.

Great book.

This story is a little dark, but I found it to be a fun and refreshing read.

Great! Wonderful!

I took a chance with this one as the other critics didn't have much to say, and I am glad I did! Great story, wonderful characters and an intriguing adventure. I haven't read through a book this fast since the Harry Potter novels. I simply couldn't put it down. Although a hidden world beneath our feet is a common theme, the author doesn't rely on that alone to keep our interest. The story that happens there is much more intriguing and captivating than the surroundings. A fun, adventurous romp. Highly recommend to children and adults alike.

Not bad ...

Starts off looking like a clever tale. The two boys are engaging, but half way through the story becomes increasingly fantastic and hard to swallow. The ending probably indicates a sequel is coming ... but I won't bother with it.

great first novel

Began slow with a few extra characters whom I looked for, but they never came back. It just kept getting better as it went along, however.

Dull and Irritating

My only comfort in having endured this story is that at least I spared my children the same ordeal. It was slow-moving, dull, and depressing. The lead character is a complete idiot-- he makes glaringly horrible choices throughout the whole book. The characters I did manage to become a little fond of were killed off. The underground world was mildly intriguing, and the overgrown bald killer cat was cool, but NOT worth the drudgery of listening to the rest of it.

Over-hyped

I was expecting something special, what with the "next Harry Potter" monicker being tossed around. I'll admit, it took me and my kids a few tries to get into Harry Potter, but by the time they got to Hogwarts, we were hooked. With this book however, the characters and writing seem to fall a little flat. It may be an engrossing story at some point, but we listened to nearly 3 hours, and decided to call it quits. So far, not impressed.
