Publisher's summary

After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson, a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any "normal" friends.

Critic reviews

"Adventure follows chaotic adventure at a rapid pace, and readers with even a passing acquaintance with the Odyssey will enjoy this fresh use of familiar stories." (School Library Journal)

Greek Gods made easy

Would you consider the audio edition of The Sea of Monsters to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version. I like listening to this kind of thing while I drive. It's easy to start and stop, and still draws you in.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters, and the unpredictability

What does Jesse Bernstein bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The voices are pretty fun.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This whole series makes me laugh often -- the unexpected campiness, and the juxtaposition of current times and ancient times.

loving this

I've always loved this series ever since it first released. still getting used to hearing Jessie's voices for the characters.. only because I've had my own version for every character for so long. but I can say with out a doubt he pulls me in regardless.

I could not put it down.

This is a great story I listen to the entire book in one sitting. I loved characters. One of the best coming of age stories since Harry Potter.

Not the perfect sequel

Three positives:
1. Our original gang is still around, and their characters haven’t changed much. It’s nice to visit with them again in this book.
2. The new character of Tyson is very endearing after a while. You should end up liking him.
3. It does progress the story in a unique way that I didn’t see coming, so you may be surprised that the end.

Two bad things:
1. The voice actor has trouble keeping up with all the voices. There are some tough moments where he just can’t keep switching well enough. It wasn’t easy for him, but that doesn’t excuse the acting — not terrible but noticeable.
2. I didn’t care much for the build up. There were some moments before “the sea of monsters” that really felt more like filler. It was fun to imagine at times, but I wanted to be out at sea. Once the book really gets started, it’s pretty fun, but it does take a little to get there.

Enjoying the story

I continue to enjoy this series. It's fun and light with just enough mythology to be interesting.

Always greay

20 years old and even after having read the books multiple times over the years since third grade I still love this series.

Great book

In my opinion one of the best top three books in my library, it's a great book.

The only thing better is Eragon and Harry Potter.
