Critic reviews

"David Tennant, best known for his role as Doctor Who, brings a slew of Scottish accents to this high-spirited rendering of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III's journey toward true heroism.... The taunting tones applied to Snotlout and his grunting sidekick, Dogsbreath, are a hoot. Tennant has a special talent for creating larger-than-life voices, particularly the lisping and stuttering of the dragon, Toothless, and the deep, malicious purring of the sea dragon. Music and ominous dragon roaring between scenes accentuate the performance." ( AudioFile)

NOT the movie but fun in its own right.

It's a good book but it's _nothing_ like the movie. There's Hiccup, Toothless, Gobber, etc., and the setting is the same, but the story and characters are different. The hardest part for me is that Toothless is not as likable in the book.

I admit that I bought it because I love David Tennant. He could read the phone book and I'll listen. I was not disappointed.

My kids LOVE this series!

Would you listen to How to Train Your Dragon again? Why?

I listened to this with my kids and we all enjoyed it immensely! Much better than the movies (although we love those too!) David Tennant makes this series so amazing! His voice and accent and character detail are spot on and my kids and I laughed and laughed while listening about Hiccup and his adventures.

Fantastic!

I admit that I initially bought and listened to this because it was David Tennant reading it. I'm a huge Doctor Who fan and he was my favorite Doctor. That said, I was very quickly pulled into Cressida Cowell's story and characters and fell in love with Toothless. He's delightfully grumpy!

Story was well written and engaging and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series! And come on, David Tennant's voice and natural accent? Spot on!

Delightful and funny

Hiccup is so doleful in the beginning that it's funny. Toothless is a brat but he is sweet at times too, like when at the end he was nose to nose with Hiccup expressing his happiness at Hiccup's survival. Vain, selfish, cowardly, lazy and obstinate as Toothless is, he is funny and helpful at times, after all what can you expect from a dragon?

Funny and clever!

Like many other reviewers, David Tennant was the main attraction for the adults in our family. But then comes the story. Cleverly written and throughly entertaining. We just finished listening last night and I’m already purchasing the second one. I’d like to say it’s for the kids, but.... that’s not entirely true.

Impeccable performance and a gem of a story!

Cute but different from the movie

It was a very cute story with many lovable characters. My only complaint was that the reader kept whispering too softly in part than would tell at others. I would normally appreciate this but since I would have to crank the volume all the way up to hear him at one part, I would immediately get blasted when he started yelling. But, over all it was a great story about a young boy learning how to appreciate his special gifts even if he seemed strange to everyone else.

Loved the Narration

Funny and amusing to me even as an adult, even if talking dragons are a bit silly. Decent story for a children's book. Not amazing, but still entertaining. David Tennant's narration in a Scottish accent is really what I liked the most.
