Publisher's Summary

All I wanted was to impress my best friend, Shona, and the other mermaids who live in the sea around Allpoints Island. But what did I do instead? I woke up the kraken, a terrifying octopus-like monster the size of an apartment building. Now he's coming after everything and everyone I love. And who can stop him? You guessed it. Me. Well, me and Shona, and another person too, someone I'd hoped never, ever to see again.

    "Predictable and whingey"

I listened to Girl with All the Gifts and liked Flinty Williams' narration. This time, she's screechy, highlighting the overall whingey tone of the series. We've gone through two and I'm avoiding any more. The characters are as you'd expect: girl after girl is full of jealousy and self-doubt. It would have been refreshing if Liz Kessler gave Emily an adventure that periodically dealt with friend issues vs friend issues that obliterate a so-so adventure. I would like these girl-centered books to break from tradition and make girl protagonists who aren't absorbed by petty conflicts. And such whiners. Ugh.
