So begins this richly entertaining story of Ella of Frell, who wants nothing more than to be free of Lucinda's gift and feel that she belongs to herself. For how can she truly belong to herself if she knows that at any time, anyone can order her to hop on one foot, cut off her hand, or betray her kingdom, and she'll have to obey?
Against a bold tapestry of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters and fairy godmothers, Ella's spirited account of her quest to break the curse is a funny, poignant and enchanting tale about an unforgettable heroine who is determined to be herself.
Ella Enchanted is a 1998 Newbery Medal Honor Book and a major motion picture.

"A winning combination of memorable characters and an alluring fantasy realm." (Publishers Weekly)
"A high-spirited, comic first novel." (The New York Times Book Review)
"A lively and satisfying reading." (AudioFile)
What a fun twist on the Cinderella Story. I really enjoyed the reader of this book, and thought she did such a great job with all the different people in this book. Her reading draws you into the story and makes you sorry when it comes to an end. For an enchanting story that will take you away from the stresses of the world, look no further! It would be even more enjoyable to listen to with your favorite princess!
The narrater is a young girl - she reads the story so well that I was captivated by it along with my 8 and 12 year old daughters! This book is quite a bit more interesting than the movie. It's an excellent choice to add to your audio library!
I really enjoyed the story of this book. It is a fun twist on Cinder"ella", but the narrator sounded as if she was about 10 years old and so did not match the romantic storyline. It was really too bad because it detracted from the story. It was ok to listen to, but it might be a better real read.
Our 12 year old daughter hated when we told her it was time to do reading homework. She has learning disabilities in language arts. It takes her so long to process the words she is reading that she can't remember what she has read. Often she would fall asleep (before supper) trying to read. Now she can hardly wait to sit down with her book and ipod to read and listen to the stories.
She is so enjoying Ella Enchanted and finds it emotionally moving. She describes it " as being there. What a delight. We'll write more when she finishes.
reader first, mom second
We definitely will. It's such an engaging story, and the voice actress is quite good for her age (and I think having a younger reader made it better for my daughter).
Char or Ella, quote from daughter: "nice people, Char laughs and tells people his secrets, and Ella tries to make things right when they're wrong, and she has enough courage to break the spell."
The feeling of it actually being a children's story; one truly for children, not just one directed at children by adults.
It's already been made, but it's SO different from the book! I would love to see a movie that actually was like the book, and I would give that one the tag line "not every present is a gift."
I really loved reading this book for the first time, and was dissapointed in the movie. Listening to the audiobook was just like i imagined it in my head when i read it to myself!
Worth the credit!

I read this book for the first time when I was 8 or 9 and still (12 years later) love it. Full of hope, love, triumphs and happy endings! Amazing strong female character. Recommend to any child and most adults too :) Its one parents can enjoy along with their kids!
We listen to audiobooks as we drive around to all the activities, errands, etc. and this has been one of our favorites so far. It was difficult to get out of the car because we wanted to keep listening!
