Critic reviews

"A different narrator performs each of three companion stories to Palacio's beloved book, Wonder. Mike Chamberlain gives the most affecting performance in the first story... Funny, moving, and true to middle school, this production is worth repeat listening." (AudioFile)

Every Story Has A Hundred Different Views

This is a collection of 3 stories from kids who are in the book Wonder. It starts out with the antagonist from the main book, Julian, and tells his story from the fall to his redemption. The story is definitely the strongest of the three. The first half of his story is about his interactions with Auggie from his point of view and why he has such a visceral reaction. It does not excuse his bullying ever, but gives us a starting point on why it happened. The second part of his story is amazing. It may be better than the original book. In this section, Jullian visits his grand-mère in France and she tells him the story of her life, which changes his life. Powerful story. Julian is seen as a real kid with real fears, struggles, and joys. He becomes more than the obnoxious bully from the main book.
The second story is called Pluto and is about Auggie's oldest friend, Christopher. The story is good but after coming from Julian's story, it doesn't pack the same punch. This is the story where Auggie appears most in this collection. The story is good but it's hard to connect with Christopher because he just wasn't around in the main book.
The third story, Shing-A-Ling, is about Charolette, another one of Auggie's welcome buddies. It is about her becoming part of a special dance group and doing a big performance with two very unlikely partners, Ximena and Summer. This story is fun and fast. It is a good place to end on a high note.
If you are a fan of the Wonder story, these three short stories will round out your experience and give you a fuller view of that life is like at Beecher Prep. Well worth the listen.

Usually, there is more to the story....

While Auggie plays a truly peripheral role in each of these three stories, this was an interesting prequel/sequel to "Wonder". The voices of these kids come through perfectly and I think it's a perfect "listen." You'll learn why Julian is such mean boy (thanks, mom and dad - yes, I said it!), how tough it can be on kids as they move on in life (it's OK, Chris, Auggie really will make friends out in the world!), and sometimes we're not really as nice as we think we are (if we're only nice when grown-ups are watching, we're really not that nice!).

I only wish we could have heard Jack Will's back story - but then again, maybe we don't need to - maybe we got to see him as he really is.

Excellent follow up to Wonder

If you could sum up Auggie & Me in three words, what would they be?

Please write more!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Auggie & Me?

There were too many to count. It was really neat to learn more about the key figures in Augies life.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

Charlotte, Really felt like she was a well rounded and well developed character.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but unfortunately I have a job and family...so not possible.

Any additional comments?

I have my 5th grade students listening to Wonder right now...This will be the next thing we listen to as soon as we are done with Wonder. Does a great job teaching lessons about tolerance, kindness and diversity.

Shingling

Great story’s, decent narrators, except for shingling. the narrator pronounces tushman, Ximena and I’m pretty sure there was another thing to. but all the stories are great!
