Gleich nach dem Abendessen, das aus Krautfleckerl, einer kleinen Flasche Pilsner und einem Erdbeerjoghurt besteht, muss sich Major Kottan heute einem Kartenspiel widmen, an dem sich seine Frau Ilse, seine Mutter und sein Sohn Walter beteiligen. Es handelt sich sozusagen um die Einlösung eines Geburtstagsgeschenks für seine Mutter. Eigentlich hätte die Mama sich die Einschaltung in mehrere, aktuelle Kriminalfälle gewünscht. Nachdem dieser Wunsch für Kottan nicht erfüllbar war, hat sich Kottan zu einem Geburtstagsgeschenk in Raten verpflichtet. Er und auch Walter müssen sich dreimal im Familienkreis dem Spiel „Schwarze Katze“ widmen, einem angeblich lustigen Spiel, das in jeder Hinsicht von Kottans Mutter dominiert wird.
