Editorial reviews

Narrator Barbara Caruso's engaging descriptions of Green Gables, a farm on Prince Edward Island, takes listeners there as they make the acquaintance of a special 11-year-old, Anne Shirley. Caruso also perfectly captures feisty Marilla Cuthbert and her shy brother, Matthew, who begins most of his sentences with a hesitant, old-fashioned "Well now . . ." Her best creation is Anne, who displays exuberance or the depths of despair, depending on the situation. The friends and neighbors Anne meets in her new home are realistic as they warm to her sweet nature. Listeners will enjoy meeting orphan Anne and her unlikely new family.

Publisher's summary

This endearing, heartwarming book has charmed generations of children and parents since it was first published in 1908. A true literary classic, Anne of Green Gables has given the world the spunky, irrepressible little girl who Mark Twain hailed as "the most moving and delightful child of fiction since the immortal Alice." To date, more than 50 million copies of the books in the series have been sold.

On Prince Edward Island, aging siblings Mathew and Marilla Cuthbert decide to adopt a boy to help with chores around the farm. But when Mathew arrives at the train platform, the only living creature in sight, legs dangling from the piles of shingles where she sits, is a freckled, green-eyed, redheaded little girl. Mathew senses immediately that life at Green Gables is going to be very different. And how right he is. The independent and fiery girl, Anne, changes the Cuthberts' lives immeasurably, and for the better.

Back in Time

Wonderfully poetic and full of imagery ... Definitely stepping back to a different, simpler time. I suspect more enjoyable as a "good listen" than a "good read."

All that is good

I am a teacher and deal daily with many challenges. Then along comes Ann(e) Shirley and brightens my day. She is the epitome of a gifted 6th grader and a reminder of goodness and hope. Mischievous she may be, but what a joy to be a part of her life during this story. And the narrator, Barbara Caruso, captures the essence of the main characters perfectly! Time for the sequel. <heart>

Barbara Caruso is the absolute BEST!

Any additional comments?

This is such a wonderful story, made more so by the amazing Barbara Caruso narrating. I bought a cheaper version and it just can't compare. When I saw this on PBS I was blown away by such a wonderful story! I immediately bought the DVDs for future viewing.Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst were absolutely perfectly cast from my memories of the book. Same for Mrs. Lind and Matthew. I can't say how many times I've watched it or listened to or read this book but it's just that good! So glad I have this from Audible.Barbara Caruso is my favorite narrator, hands down.

The Brightness of Living

Perhaps I needed to turn seventy to enjoy these delightful tales, somewhat over the top. Maybe they were simply joyous relief amidst reading novels re: the aftermath of wars. To be enjoyed.
