Publisher's summary

Thou shalt not be horrible.

Imagine for a moment what the world might look like if we as people of faith, morality, and conscience actually aspired to this mantra.

What if we were fully burdened to create a world that was more loving and equitable than when we arrived?

What if we invited one another to share in wide-open, fearless, spiritual communities truly marked by compassion and interdependence?

What if we daily challenged ourselves to live a faith that simply made us better humans?

John Pavlovitz explores how we can embody this kinder kind of spirituality where we humbly examine our belief system to understand how it might compel us to act in less-than-loving ways toward others.

In If God Is Love, Don't Be a Jerk, John Pavlovitz examines the bedrock ideas of our religion: the existence of hell, the utility of prayer, the way we treat LGBTQ people, the value of anger, and other doctrines to help all of us take a good, honest look at how the beliefs we hold can shape our relationships with God and our fellow humans - and to make sure that love has the last, loudest word.

WWJD

A fantastic and entertaining story about how to be truly Christ like in an America filled with far too many professed and hypocritical “Christians.” This book explains precisely why I left two Evangelical, tRump churches and now practice my faith and belief in Jesus daily and authentically by meeting people where they are.

Gave me hope

This book gave me hope and maybe a place in my heart for a bigger God. The premise that God is love is so obvious but seemingly lost with many professed Christians right now. Pavlovitz’s beliefs, told through personal stories & examples in accessible language, resonate with me & point me toward being a better human. After reading I can conceive the possibility of moving back towards a spirituality I’ve lost in recent years. I recommend this book for anyone who recognizes the need for love & kindness in our world.

This book hits the mark!

ALL people are worthy of love, regardless of race, country of origin, gender, sexual orientation, political party, or religious affiliation. If we could find it in ourselves to treat everyone lovingly, even when we don’t like them, or we disagree vehemently with them, we could make the planet a more humane place to live. Kudos to John Pavlovitz for an eye-opening book!

Bravo

Mr. Pavlovitz has truly embraced REAL Christianity and has put a bright spotlight on the hypocrisy of todays so-called Chri religion.

The book your soul needs

My soul needed a book like this. My view of God has changed over the years, and John compares that experience at the beginning of the book when he tells a hilarious story of trying to fit into an old pair of pants. I couldn’t relate more. It also gives me a better understanding of the old wineskin parable Jesus told his disciples. I feel like I’m in that stage of my life where my understanding of God won’t fit into the version of God I was handed as a child. This book really is about God’s love and how we should always choose love instead of hate, no matter how hard it can be sometimes. I listened to the audible version of this book because I can multitask and as a mom and a teacher, I’m always multitasking. I did order the hardback as a gift for a friend.

The Truth

Jesus speaks to me through John. The message isn't new; we're just not living it. Try harder, people! Thanks for the reminder, John!!

Breath of fresh air

After becoming part of the great resignation following nearly two decades working in and for the church, I would describe my relationship with religion as “it’s complicated.” Like many I grew up in church. I think went to a Christian university and then went to work for the church. Throughout all of that time, I changed and I also do THE CHURCH (I.e. organized religion) change in a way that I wouldn’t say was for the better. I connected with this book in so many ways and it was just all of the things I have been thinking and feeling. It was also challenging. THAT is the best type of book. Read this book. You won’t be sorry you did.
