Love this book!

It's unusual to find a book that makes you laugh out loud, then touch your heart and cause the tears to fall. Humphrey somehow does both in an unusual and very distinct telling of her experiences in aging and in life. Her narration brings to life her very relatable memoirs on aging and you can’t help but feel you are listening to a good friend. Highly recommend!

Reality of Age

When I wasn't laughing, I was shaking my head yes. As a sixty something, Ms. Humphrey touched on every topic that affects/effects women as they age. I know, I've experienced it all. I listened to the audio version of the book and her verbal inflection made it perfect.

insightful and humorous

This is one book I am so very glad was narrated by the author! Her rhythm, timing, and material are spot on! love her sense of humor and her view and reflection on life. I am almost 60, not almost 70, but loved this book. I am , like her, wanting to find the humor in what is to be and I am sure I will listen again...if I don't forget ;)

Funny and Uplifting

How I Learned I’m Old by Romney Humphrey is a Nonfiction book about how the author discovered that the years have stacked up and she has reached the Autumn of her life. It’s a relatively short listen, almost 4 hours in duration, and I truly enjoyed the fact that we, as the listeners, hear Romney as she tells the story directly to us, a thing possible only with audiobooks narrated by their author.

Conveniently split into three sections, Mind, Body and Soul, How I Learned I’m Old is a really enjoyable and insightful narrative experience that made me consider once again how the passing of time affects each and everyone of us. I somehow connected with Romney as I am 36 years old now and both my mother and mother-in-law are closing fast on the big 70. I am sure that from now on i’ll be more understanding with both of them and will find the patience and the necessary extra time to stay more when we visit or when we talk on the phone.

The book is beautifully written and at the same time it is very easy to follow. Filled with vivid descriptions, peppered with amusing, witty, poignant and at time sarcastic comments, it will make you think about what you’ll do when your life’s Winter will come calling…

Romney Humphrey does a fantastic job with the narration for How I Learned I’m Old and delivers the best possible narrative and immersive experience for the listener with her clear, hopeful and cheery voice. It’s just like hearing a dear family member, your mom or maybe your grandmother recalling extremely interesting events from her life at a Sunday’s dinner alongside loved ones.

So, with How I Learned I’m Old, Romney Humphrey manages to make us think about our own vulnerabilities, but not by bringing us to the edge of depression, quite the contrary, just by telling us to treasure every moment, to be kind to one another and to smile and say a nice word to a stranger once in a while…
