Publisher's summary

A fresh and funny contemporary YA rom-com about teens working as costumed characters in a local amusement park.

"I'm wrecked with love for this funny, joyful, bighearted book." (Becky Albertalli, best-selling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda)

Elouise (Lou) Parker is determined to have the absolute best, most impossibly epic summer of her life. There are just a few things standing in her way:

  • She's landed a job at Magic Castle Playland...as a giant dancing hot dog.
  • Her crush, the dreamy diving pirate Nick, already has a girlfriend, who is literally the princess of the park. But Lou's never liked anyone, guy or otherwise, this much before, and now, she wants a chance at her own happily ever after.
  • Her best friend, Seeley, the carousel operator, has always been up for anything, but she's decidedly not on board when it comes to Lou's quest to set her up with the perfect girl or Lou's scheme to get close to Nick.
  • And it turns out that this will be their last summer at Magic Castle Playland - ever - unless she can find a way to stop it from closing.

Jennifer Dugan's sparkling debut coming-of-age queer romance stars a princess, a pirate, a hot dog, and a carousel operator who find love - and themselves - in unexpected people and unforgettable places.

"Both classic and new, hysterical and heartfelt, and packed with all the awesomeness and awkwardness of first love, first job, and the painful thrill of growing up." (Mackenzi Lee, best-selling author of The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue)

Critic reviews

“I'm wrecked with love for this funny, joyful, bighearted book.” (Becky Albertalli, best-selling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda)

“I never expected I'd fall so hard and so fast for a girl in a hot dog suit. Both classic and new, hysterical and heartfelt, and packed with all the awesomeness and awkwardness of first love, first job, and the painful thrill of growing up. So if you need me this summer, I'll be at Magic Castle Playland with the hot dog girl.” (Mackenzi Lee, best-selling author of The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue)

Hot Dog Girl is a treat of a book packed with scheming, queer romance, and amusement park food. This laugh-out-loud debut made me hungry and stole my heart.” (Rachel Lynn Solomon, author of You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone)

Hotdog Girl

I thought the story had a good premise and could not wait to read it. I liked the characters but Eloise was a bit of annoying and granted yes she got better towards the end but throughout she was just a jerk. I thought the narration was amazing and really enjoyed it

Amazing!!

I would love to see a movie version of this. It was an amazing love story. I'm a sensitive guy that loves to experience tear jerker moments and this book did not disappoint. When Lou found the window locked, I cried for her, and when Mr. P realized what they were all doing for him, it was such a beautiful moment. Jennifer Dugan is a great author, and the narration by Brittany Pressley was very engaging. Very good work by all involved. Thank you for a great story, I was sad when it was all over. 🙂👍

So much better then what I expected!

I’ve owned this book for three years and finally got around to reading it. And I couldn’t put it down. It absolutely was not what I expected. Especially when I bought it at a religious 2nd hand store. But the story was adorable. I saw some reviews saying it’s bad because of the fake dating plot, and cheating and such. And honestly I think that’s not the real reason they disliked it (homophobia much?). The book had amazing representation of Bi and other LGBTQ characters, with a fun small town theme park setting. What’s not to love?

I also love Brittany Pressley as a narrator so perfect choice!

dissappointing cliche

I've never encountered a main character that was more antagonistic and self conceited (despite their effort to do good). it seemed as though the characters personality was very whiny and ignorant which seemed to out perform the overall attempts at being kind. unfortunately this very experience ruined the book for me and i felt as though i had to push through the book just for the sake of finishing it
