"This quaint performance by a five-narrator ensemble will tug at the heartstrings."—AudioFile

Trailblazing pop star, actor and director, Hayley Kiyoko debuts her first novel, a coming-of-age romance based on her breakthrough hit song and viral video, GIRLS LIKE GIRLS.

It’s summertime and 17-year-old Coley has found herself alone, again. Forced to move to rural Oregon after just losing her mother, she is in no position to risk her already fragile heart. But when she meets Sonya, the attraction is immediate.

Coley worries she isn't worthy of love. Up until now, everyone she's loved has left her. And Sonya's never been with a girl before. What if she's too afraid to show up for Coley? What if by opening her heart, Coley's risking it all?

They both realize that when things are pushed down, and feelings are forced to shrivel away, Coley and Sonya will be the ones to shrink. It’s not until they accept the love they fear and deserve most, that suddenly the song makes sense.

Based on the billboard-charting smash hit song and viral music video GIRLS LIKE GIRLS, Hayley Kiyoko's debut novel is about embracing your truth and realizing we are all worthy of being loved back.

Editorial Review

What you won’t do for love
Multihyphenate Hayley Kiyoko’s trajectory and creative prowess fascinates me: She’s a pop star, actress, social media sensation, director and now we can add author to the list. Her debut YA novel, based on the hit song she penned of the same name, covers grief, longing, and belonging in a multifaceted yet approachable way. Coley, who is voiced by Kiyoko, is facing devastating loss and seismic shifts in her world when she meets and falls for Sonya, a confident, popular girl in the new town she never wanted to move to. Set in the early aughts, the AIM messages and Live Journal entries add a fun nostalgic touch. This coming-of-age story about losing and finding yourself in formative relationships delivers. Get lost in this listen this summer. —Kelley S., Audible Editor

Perfect

I don’t write reviews, but I cannot put into words what this book made me feel. It’s just perfect. Hayley Kiyoko always had a way with words and her poetic debut novel further solidifies this. Sure parts of the storyline could have been flushed out more, but I don’t think it was necessary at all. I related to this novel way too much: the instant connection, gay panic, first love, grief, fear, heartbreak and acceptance…I wish I had it in 2006 when I was 17.

Amazing!!!

I had high expectations, since the song and the music video were so great, and not only were they met they were exceeded! I wish I had this book when I was younger. I also loved that I was transported to the early 2000’s. The story telling was amazing and I felt like I got to know and care about not just our main girls but the other characters as well. Definitely recommend this book.

Incredible content and realistic narration.

I’ve been a fan of Hayley Kiyoko for years. I was excited for this book, but I had no idea how much I needed to hear it. She did a wonderful job of painting the background story to her music video, but there was so much more to it than that. She included different characters that were in different places with finding themselves and showed character development for all of them. I cannot say enough good things about GLG. The artist that changed my life when I discovered this song and music video has done it again.

Expectations Exceeded

I watched the girls like girls music video the day it came out. i have had 8 years to come up with the story in my head. my interpretation that is. and i did. every time i hear the song i see the story i made that fit with what my experiences were at the time. i was a little worried about this book admittedly but i also knew Hayley wouldn’t be letting us down. so i preordered and waited. i am in love with this story. it’s so well written, the narration is wonderful, the voice acting had me feeling all the emotions with the characters. I think what’s most important out of everything though, at least to me, was that it had a happy ending. we don’t usually get happy endings in LGBTQ+ books or movies or other media. but we got it in this. it was a ride getting there but it would be a short book if it didn’t have the highs and lows. if you’re on the dense for this book, get it, you won’t regret it.

Best representation I've heard yet

The writing and performance was phenomenal. By the end of the book I had felt so many different emotions. One of which was feeling kinship to the main character. What it feels like to be in love with someone who struggles to accept their feelings for you. I think many of us had this scenario play out one way or the other. Thank you for writing this and telling a story that countless people can relate to.
