Critic reviews

"Those familiar with the six-part PBS series on Joseph Campbell will especially enjoy this audio production. Moyers follows the same format as the TV series: The journalist plies the tuning fork to the teacher's mind, and we listen as Campbell waxes rhapsodic on the hero, the nature of myth, storytelling, the goddess, and finally what we understand of eternity. The dialogue, like the video, is filled with Campbell's wonderful stories and punctuated with illustrative sound clips, ranging from Star Wars to the Oum prayer of Tibetan monks. This production goes into greater depth than the video text, focusing more on Campbell's exciting ideas than his personality and work. Dialogue, of course, is the best format for ideas, and Campbell's insights into myth and religion are a most refreshing response to our age, so deeply troubled with the clashing voices of religious fundamentalism. Let's listen again to Joseph Campbell." (AudioFile)

Wonderfully informative

A great series which puts ancient knowledge and human adaptability in perspective with what we commonly see of religions today. Makes it easier to understand all the origins and meanings, intentions of how our thought came about and how they were necessary to make exist and make peace with the brutal operations of the world we inhabited. So much of these meanings are still needed today.

Makes you think

I loved listening to this audio. It really challenges your belief system and poses questions that disrupts our conceived notions of reality. I can’t say that I agree with absolutely everything but I also think that was his point. He wasn’t saying that his ideas are absolute truth, but that his ideology should awaken our consciousness to the possibility of something greater and more meaningful.

Should be required listening for every human being

I recommend this collection of Bill Moyers interviewing Joseph Campbell to every single human being on the planet. This should be required in all schools starting by in high school. It is that fundamental, that important. It’s historically accurate and it’s just loaded with fearless, clear wisdom that is virtually extinct in our academics today. It fosters a deep respect for world religions and traditions, while sensing the inherent need for them to exist. So rare among the humanities today, which are infested with politics.

Nobody just an admirer.

Just a flawless presentation into a world that truly belongs to us. It was like listening to an elder conversation you couldn’t miss a word. They all matter. Then they dont. Lol. Lived the book

A must read to anyone and everyone.

What did you love best about The Power of Myth: Programs 1-6?

Getting to hear Campbell and all of his ideas are second to none. Hearing this man and getting to step into his mind is more valuable then people probably think. His translation of hero through story is riveting. I will be listening again and again.

What did you like best about this story?

Hearing Campbell stories are the best. The way he breaks down the hero motive is awesome. It gives you a whole new look about the hero of our story. Hearing him and using his work has done worlds for my writing. He gives you insight to what make a hero in our story.

Have you listened to any of Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listen to other stories and works from both Campbell and Moyers. This is a whole lot different. You get great insight and feel to what makes the person that you hear about in the stories. This in depth story is in a league of its own. Once you hear it you know why.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If you can listen all in one sitting I probably would because I didn't want to stop. The way it is broken up though is great though. It has aloud me to come back and get a info filled segments in just a short time. You can listen to this in section or all at once, you will probably do both in time.

Any additional comments?

If you are even thinking about getting this or toying with the idea of a listen, listen to it. This book is a great read for anyone and everyone. The ideas and stories in the book should be heard by everyone and can be. There is a lot more to this than you probably think there is. You will be glad you took the time once it is all said and done.
