Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Funny. Irreverant. Historic. If American history had ever been presented this poignantly, more of us might have paid attention. Stewart and friends run the gamut: republicans and democrats, deadpan and laughable, serious and totally absurd. The vast array of comedians each deliver hilarious soundbites and yet the book comes together with stunning coherence. — Chris Doheny

Publisher's summary

Jon Stewart, host of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning The Daily Show, and his coterie of patriots deliver a hilarious look at American government.

Termed a "political king-maker" by Newsweek, and "the Dan Rather of infotainment" by Vanity Fair, Jon Stewart, along with the writers of The Daily Show, combines his riotous wit and razor-sharp insight in this hilarious book.

American-style democracy is the world's most beloved form of government, which explains why so many other nations are eager for us to impose it on them. But what is American democracy?

In America (The Audiobook), Jon Stewart and The Daily Show writing staff offer their insights into our unique system of government, dissecting its institutions, explaining its history and processes, and exploring the reasons why concepts like "one man, one vote", "government by the people", and "every vote counts" have become such popular urban myths.

Among the topics:

  • Ancient Rome: The First Republicans
  • The Founding Fathers: Young, Gifted, and White
  • The President: King of Democracy
  • The Supreme Court: 18 Legs, Four Tits, One Mission
  • Running for Office: What Are You Thinking?
  • The Media: Can It Be Stopped?
  • The Future of Democracy: The Constitutional Robocracy and You!

"Cheeky, irreverent, and playfully ingenuous....This humorous sendup of American politics never fails to entertain, poke fun, and provoke thought." (Publishers Weekly)
"The devil's own comedic handiwork, a side-splitting guide to the abuses and absurdities built into our political processes and institutions....Sustained clever writing and a smart, durable premise....As with Mr. Stewart's priceless anchorman persona and his show's hawk-eyed editing for real news gaffes, there is enough truth here to make America almost as instructive as it is sly." (The New York Times)

    Still Amazing in 2021….

Although I think a 2nd addition is warranted because of all the updated material that could be used in 2021 after a, ahem…. certain one term president, this book is still one of the funniest, relevant (& surprisingly academic) books out there…

    Almost perfect in every way…

    Not great

Get Al Frankens Lies, and the lying liers who tell them. Much better satire with debunking of many lies the right tells. But told in an extremly funny way. I love the daily show and was looking forward to hearing this. Unfortunatly it doesn't live up to my expectation even remotely. Not bad just not great.

    Good Read

I personally like John Stewart and I thought this was a funny read. I lost interest in some parts because it was a lot of politics (partly because I am not the smartest guy when it comes to politics). I enjoy many books on politics to an extent, but found it kind of hard to get into at times. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the book very much. Being that this was my very first abridged copy of a book I was a bit concerned, but what they have left in is very good. The sound affects and the readers of the book make it a good and fast read (sometimes it is nice to have a book that is not 15 hours long). I recommend America as a quick and fun read.

    Outstanding.

This book underlines both the strengths and weaknesses of the current American geopolitical system in a funny, funny way. Highly recommended.

Laughed so hard almost had to pull over

From the "welcome non-readers..." introduction to the hilarious guest voices, it is clear that this audiobook got well-spent extra attention in production. Based on politics, people will either love or hate this book. People who love the United States for the principles on which was founded will love it. People who prefer to disregard those principles in favor of knee-jerk force based on random, local and temporary political expediency will probably think that this book is treason.

And the occasional "perspective" from Canada was great...

    First class history (parody)

In his satire, Stewart articulates insight that is clever, shrewd and irreverent. This is a very funny attack on the American political system. While Stewart is clearly left leaning, the entire political system takes abuse. Stewart is clearly focused on all that is absurd, or can be spun as contrary to common sense, in American political history. This is the history of the United States and commentary on our political system in the spirit of the Daily Show. Listen to this book ? laugh out loud funny.

    America

The book is funny & insitefull, just like the author. If you enjoy the guys TV show you will like this. Its nice in that it was designed as an audio book & had different folks come in from time to time & is not like many others with someone just reading the book to you.

I'm not a history buff or really into poltics and still enjoyed this one.

Funny, Excellent, Educational. What's not to like

One day, if our children are lucky, all history books will be taught like this.
I have learned and retained more information about American History in this audiobook than I did in many lectures coming from Berkeley.

Plus, it's Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert doing the narration. Wish the book was longer.

A keeper! I laughed out loud.

This book is fantastic. Audible does not have enough comedy and so this one shines all the more. Stewart's sardonic brand of political humor is just what the doctor ordered for disillusioned Americans.
