Publisher's summary

This is the remarkable story of the English language; from its beginnings as a minor guttural Germanic dialect to its position today as a truly established global language.

The Adventure of English is not only an enthralling story of power, religion, and trade, but also the story of people, and how their lives continue to change the extraordinary language that is English.

Best for lovers of the language

I gave this 4 stars because I'm fascinated by the English language (my native tongue). I suspect many would find this book very dry -- I did in places, even though I cherish it overall. I think it's a book that would appeal to the curious, rather than those who want "a good read." I would love to sit next to this author at a dinner party -- for 30 minutes at a time. He really does trace the beginnings of the language and describe its development in great detail. But I would recommend it only for those who have an insatiable curiosity about the language and a deep love of it.

Capital performance

I love this book very much, especially the performer's ability to approximate different English Accents.

Highly recommended

Much non-fiction entertainment for your dollar here.
Lots of serious research presented kindly.
So much history I hadn't heard.
Glad to have found this one too.

fun and informative

I found this book very interesting. I appreciate the narrator being able to pronounce the Olde English and other foreign words. Interesting stories explaining or illustrating concepts. I recommend this book much more as an audio read than a visual one!

Very interesting and entertaining.

I'm not a linguist, but this seems very well researched and thought out. Lots of fascinating anecdotes and facts about the English language, it's history and even a little bit about all the peoples involved.

I wish he did just a bit more on comparing the history of English to the history of other languages. He frequently describes English and strong or tough, which is a great way to talk about it. As I said, however, I wish I had some context.

The full and constantly changing story of English

The narrator is amazing! His command of the numerous accents and foreign words used in this book is astounding. It makes the story infinitely better to listen to than to read in print form where the reader would have to guess at the pronunciations. Interesting and comprehensive. I recommend this book to the professional and the merely curious alike. It is quite long, but you can skip through the parts you are not as interested in.

A great way to relate the story of English

"Wow!" That's really all I can say after the last word of this book is spoken! Throughout the book, the author treats the language as a living, breathing, growing entity. And after experiencing this book, I'd say he's right! At times, English is facing persecution and extinction. At other times, English is rolling roughshod over whole nations. The author deals in details of history to make his personification of English stand on two feet. After this book, I have a new found pride to speak a language that has had such a magnificant journey.
