Publisher's summary

She found Anne Frank's diary and brought the world a message of love and hope.

For more than two years, Miep Gies and her husband helped hide the Franks from the Nazis. Like thousands of unsung heroes of the Holocaust, they risked their lives each day to bring food, news, and emotional support to the victims. From her own remarkable childhood as a World War I refugee to the moment she places a small, red-orange, checkered diary -- Anne's legacy -- in Otto Frank's hands, Miep Gies remembers her days with simple honesty and shattering clarity. Each page rings with courage and heartbreaking beauty.

A Fast Reading Could-Not-Put-It-Down book

This book is a great companion to the Anne Frank Diary, seeing a fresh perspective of Anne. Not only did this memoir provide a glimpse, but a significant contribution was made by writing this book to fill in the gaps of what was taking place outside the Annex, that Anne could not have known about. The memoir also continues on where Anne's diary abruptly stops which is absolutely invaluable for a reader of Anne's Diary. In fact, I plan on reading Anne's Diary again, since it's been more than 40 years. Because of that interval, reading Ms. Miep's memoir was still suspenseful to a degree because I had forgotten the exact circumstances that led to the Frank Family and others leaving with the Germans. Also, I didn't realize that there was more time between their capture and the end of the war; it was more lengthy than I thought. I remembered it being just a week or so when, in reality, it was more like the war ended weeks after their demise in the camps; which seems to be a more common thread in the holocaust literature I have read. This book took me 2 days to listen to (I was making curtains)I was so captivated.

Thank you Miep Gies

A must listen. A beautifully read, updated version of Anne Frank Remembered... words that will forever live in my heart. Thank you Miep for your courage and may God forever bless all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to hide the Jews during WWII. And thanks to Alison Leslie Gold for bringing Miep's story to us so that this horror of all horrors will never be forgotten.

More than a book about Anne Frank

This book is not really about just Anne Frank. It is about the people of Holland under Nazi occupation. This is a docu-story about the day to day life of the Dutch people under Nazi rule from the mouth of the woman whose family brought the Frank's, and the Franks' friends in the hiding place, their daily food and supplies throughout the entire Nazi occupation. It is not written in a sentimental way, leaving the sentiment to the listener's imagination.
A very authentic sounding story. I listened to every word and will listen to it again next year to remind me of why we hate Hitler and his butchers.

Terrifying, uplifting and emotional!!!

This is a book that will stay with you for a very long time. Perhaps a life time. As I listened to this, I asked myself a simple question. Could I put my life in danger to save a friend? I do not know the answer. But I thank god, there are others who selflessly sacrifice their own safety for the sake of others. This story is written for all those unsung heroes, past, present and yet to come. Even though we know much about Anne Frank and her diary, this book added an extra perspective on Anne for me. Strictly speaking it is the life story of Miep Gies and her husband Jan Gies. But there were many others who took extraordinary risks for the safety of the hideaways. Their stories are also told. This is more than a play or a movie. This is a life lived in an evil time where trying to feed eight people in an attic can mean life or death. This is true history at its best.

Very interesting companion book...

or to be listened to/read in isolation. The narrator is excellent and gives a feeling that Miep is actually speaking to you. It is great to hear the rest of the story from an eye witness. Miep gives a different view of the famous story and creates a melieu that will cause you to cry in sympathy. A great story.

Fascinating story..great narration

I have never read the diary of Anne Frank but I still loved this book. You definitely do not need to have read the diary. Barbara Rosenblat once again does a fantastic job of making the story come to life.

Any additional comments?

Wow, this book was unbelievable. My parents lived through WWII in Europe, but nothing I have read or heard compares to this to capture the utter evil that enveloped Europe, the amazing human spirit that let's people survive the most unbelievable circumstances, or the effect of the war on Europe.
It is easy to think of 6 million killed as a number and be numb. This book humanizes the suffering and effect on people in a way I have never experienced. Unbelievable experience to listen too. And the performance was amazing.

Anne Frank story told from perspective of Miep!

I always knew Miep Gies was an incredible woman. Now I know she wasn't just taking care of the Franks et. al. She and her husband Jan had many other "projects" they were protecting. Barba Rosenblat's voice was perfect for this. Lovely read, hated for it to end, even thought subject matter painful and difficult.

This is From a Different Perspective

Where does Anne Frank Remembered rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Way up there!!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Anne Frank Remembered?

Many, what I didn't know was how Ann and her family came to be in the Attic and who would sacrifice so much, their lives, to hide them. This story tells that side and how the relationship began and why.

What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did a beautiful job and was pleasant to listen to

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

not sure
