Publisher's summary

We all want to live long, healthy, and happy lives. But the path to achieve this - fitness and nutrition - is fraught with popular yet dangerously misleading myths about personal wellness. How do you separate the fact from the fiction? How can you recognize when you're doing your body more harm than good? Scientific knowledge has greatly expanded our understanding of how the human body works, laying many previously held ideas about fitness and nutrition to rest. These six self-contained lectures explore the myths, lies, and half-truths about fitness and nutrition, including myths about foods to fuel your exercise, proper hydration, eating and exercise habits, using vitamins and supplements, eating and exercise disorders, and extreme physical activity.

As you examine the pros and cons of various training and eating programs, discover new ways to be healthy and active, and enhance your ability to make educated decisions about your own health needs, you'll be taking an important step toward achieving your personal wellness goals, whether that means losing a few pounds or maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

With this ready and accessible tool, you'll gain a wealth of practical tips and skills you can use every single day to improve and enhance the way you eat and exercise. Join Dr. Goodman as he shows you powerful and true ways to transform your life for the better.

Basic Nutritional and Fitness Information

Much of the information is common sense. For example, eat whole foods, exercise, and don't fall for fad diets. In spite of all the money spent on diet books, pills, and programs, most people know fad diets aren't sustainable (especially if they've already failed in losing weight with other diets). Some good tidbits to know is that alcohol is dehydrating while coffee and tea are hydrating since they are mild diuretics. Also, late night eating doesn't cause weight gain. There are several chapters about extreme sports and activities, protein loading, and carbo loading. Since most people are more concerned with too little exercising (rather too much exercising), those chapters aren't relevant for most people.

very informative and helpful for all.

As a sports nutritionist, I'm always eager to learn more within my field. Though I think of myself to be very knowledgeable in my field, I found a lot of useful information within these lectures. I highly recommend this audio book!

Very Nutritious!

This was EXACTLY what I wanted. A basic explanation about the link between nutrition and fitness done be a world class expert who speaks colloquial English. Did I know some of this stuff. Sure, I'm a literate adult. Did I know all of it, or how it fit together… NOPE! Now I do. Nuff said.

Mainly for endurance Athletes.

What made the experience of listening to The Myths of Nutrition and Fitness the most enjoyable?

Since I had just had some issues at a competition, I found the aspect describing how older people (I am now 60) show signs of dehydration beneficial. This is what I experienced.

Any additional comments?

His focus was mainly on endurance athletes. However, one of the things that struck me was the number of recommendation he had that were very different and even contrary to what I had just hard on a Great courses class from a nutritionist.

I read this after reading a book on bodybuilding

After reading a book on working out to reshape my body. Weight loss and then muscle building guide , I found this book to have most of the same information with several examples of the doctors personal life. He goes further into detail into some of the myths but everything he said I found I heard it before in a weight loss book called burn the fat feed the muscle . So I was disappointed but had I not read the weight loss guide book it would have been very insightful and interesting. The speaker doesn’t have the most interesting voice but you understand every word clearly.
