Dr. John E. Sarno, author of the revolutionary book Mind Over Back Pain, is a medical pioneer whose program has helped patients overcome their back conditions- without drugs or dangerous surgery. Now, using his latest research into TMS, Dr. Sarno goes one step further. After identifying stress and other psychological factors in back pain, he demonstrates how many of his patients have then gone on to heal themselves without exercise or other physical therapy.
Discover why self-motivated and successful people are prone to TMS, how anxiety and repressed anger trigger muscle spasms, how people "train themselves" to experience back pain, and how you may get relief from back pain within two to six weeks by recognizing TMS and its causes.

This book suggests an interesting tie between suppressed anger and physical manifestations of pain. It suggests that the pain is the body's attempt to distract one from suppressed anger. While I am convinced of a connection between the two, I think this approach might be overly simplistic. I think the author is at times too dismissive of other points of view and treatments.
I can immediately see the push back to be expected from this material. The mind brain body connection theory is not new but to hear a western trained Dr put the connection together honoring what was once a held belief that ALL back injury is of the body, and gently and slowly introduce an alternative option, has yielded amazing and fast results. I am a believer. Only because I put it to practice and felt relief with NO additional physical therapy. After 1 year of consistent pain and numbing I can say that after 1 week I am pain free and the numbing has been significantly reduced. I will continue the practice. Thank you Dr Sarno. For the courage and the commitment to share this info.
This book nails it. Not just about back pain, which I don't even really have, but more about the body's ability to manifest physical problems to distract from emotional ones. I was a little weary of this because it sounds very "woo woo" self healing, but it's important to realize that the medical reality is that many people are on disability with absolutely nothing wrong with them. If you go to a doctor with pain, they are going to find something I.e. Slipped disk, bulging disk. Everybody has these. Why isn't everyone debilitated? Read this or get the audiobook. You won't be sorry.
The most effective book I've ever read. It's a journey into what's what. Medical science rarely incorporates the physiological aspects of cures and healing.
I highly recommend this book if you have any type of chronic or reoccurring pain.
Say something about yourself!
I had to be willing to examine my beliefs and examine possibilities of repressed aggression. It was fun to consider what I could possibly be angry at including the fact that I don't wear a jet pack every day to avoid traffic congestion! This book is for those who have tried everything for their back pain except for examining possibilities. So, as I ..."dwell(ed) in possibility" to quote Emily Dickinson, I began to laugh and breathe much easier. I am grateful to say my back pain is more sporadic and I have fun with the strategies in the book.
I love Dr. Sarno's medical experience and how he works with pain management. He is a credible resource in this area.
I still have some back pain but it's getting better after only 3 weeks. I am optimistic that Sarno's work will be one of the best things u have ever learned
Reading this book was like looking in the mirror. Its beyond me that this is not the standard of care. There just isn't any money in this type of treatment. In my opinion, this book is more important now with the state of our health care in such a precarious position
