Tutto l'episodio si basa sulle azioni di guerra e sui risvolti psicologici che tutto ciò ha in alcuni dei protagonisti principali: Andrej Bolkonskij e Nikolaj Rostov, che sono sul campo.
Tolstoj introduce anche altri due personaggi importanti: Dolochov e Denisov che partecipano ai combattimenti comandati dal generale Kutuzov. Nikolaj è terrorizzato dal suo primo scontro col nemico e viene ferito; Andrej capisce che questa guerra non è come se l'aspettava.
