Story
Are you looking for magic spells that actually work? Hoodoo is old North American folk magic, born from African spiritual traditions brought over by slaves. Over the centuries it incorporated Native American and European influences, using what worked and discarding what did not. This process has made Hoodoo into an adaptable, powerful magical system that works. This audiobook covers everything you need to know to get started with Hoodoo, and includes over 25 simple spells to draw money to you, bring luck and love into your life, and protect yourself from evil.

In this book, Katrina Hazzard-Donald explores African Americans' experience and practice of the herbal, healing folk belief tradition known as Hoodoo. Working against conventional scholarship, Hazzard-Donald argues that Hoodoo emerged first in three distinct regions she calls "regional Hoodoo clusters" and that after the turn of the 19th century, Hoodoo took on a national rather than regional profile.

Story
In Backwoods Witchcraft, Jake Richards offers up a folksy stew of family stories, lore, omens, rituals, and conjure crafts that he learned from his great-grandmother, his grandmother, and his grandfather, a Baptist minister who Jake remembers could "rid someone of a fever with an egg or stop up the blood in a wound." The witchcraft practiced in Appalachia is very much a folk magic of place, a tradition that honors the seen and unseen beings that inhabit the land as well as the soil, roots, and plant life.

The use of the elements in a wide range of systems and practices will be examined. This book is a gift, thank you 🙏🏻💜✨
Najah Lightfoot’s book has inspired a consistent and beautiful magickal practice for me unlike any other book before it. For example, I listened to Najah’s “Calling in the Directions” ritual every morning for several weeks until I memorized it and was able to tweak and make it my own. This daily ritual offers me grounding and I look forward to it every morning. There are so many other practical rituals I look forward to incorporating into my practice. Machelle Williams is also such a wonderful narrator and her voice is perfect 💜

Good for what it is
This title came up on a search for Hoodoo and for that purpose, I found it lacking. This is a nice introduction to the author's spiritual practice. There are nice little poetic vignettes throughout. While there is certainly some Hoodoo influence, it is impossible to unravel what is coming from the author's background in witchcraft, Hoodoo, etc. I'm not familiar with the author to really care about her specific practice but the book could serve as a good introduction to some magical concepts to beginners. Her instructions for the LBRP contain an error in the opening and closing performance of the qabalistic cross. She mixes up left and right, perhaps a mirror-image misunderstanding of the tree of life. Might seem like a small thing but she also advises the listener to learn and practice the ritual based on these instructions before they go to look into more detailed information from other sources. The listener would do well to consult other sources before getting too comfortable doing something backward. I'm all for an eclectic approach to spirituality but this gave me the suspicion that some of the information delivered in the book might be a little less than rigorously understood/communicated.

The performance is fine. The narrator does a great job.
The content however doesn't really fit with anything else I've ever read about this subject. The author makes several claims that, in my experience, aren't true.
