Publisher's summary

An army surgeon must amputate a soldier's leg in a crude field hospital during the Civil War. The doctor is so skilled that he accomplishes most of the operation in a mere 40 seconds - an assistant times the procedure - yet his mind is consumed with thoughts of the personal toll the war has taken on him.

Poignant, beautiful story

This story is about a doctor in the Civil War. It is obviously not easy to hear. But the story is beautifully written, and I'm so glad I listened to it.

War (short) story, told by medics

I actually like being surprised by the story when the title doesn't really give it away. This was a quick glimpse into war in Virginia, in the 1800's as told by the doctors and medics.
