Family ties are tested and transformed in the new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author of Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. With her wise, wry, and poignant novels of families and friendships - Waiting to Exhale, Getting to Happy, and A Day Late and a Dollar Shortamong them - Terry McMillan has touched millions of listeners.
Now, in her eighth novel, McMillan gives exuberant voice to characters who reveal how we live now - at least as lived in a racially diverse Los Angeles neighborhood.
Kaleidoscopic, fast-paced, and filled with McMillan's inimitable humor, Who Asked You? opens as Trinetta leaves her two young sons with her mother, Betty Jean, and promptly disappears. BJ, a trademark McMillan heroine, already has her hands full dealing with her other adult children, two opinionated sisters, an ill husband, and her own postponed dreams - all while holding down a job as a hotel maid. Her son Dexter is about to be paroled from prison; Quentin, the family success, can't be bothered to lend a hand; and taking care of two lively grandsons is the last thing BJ thinks she needs.
The drama unfolds through the perspectives of a rotating cast of characters, pitch-perfect, each playing a part, and full of surprises.
Who Asked You? casts an intimate look at the burdens and blessings of family and speaks to trusting your own judgment even when others don't agree. McMillan's signature voice and unforgettable characters bring universal issues to brilliant, vivid life.

Tell us about yourself! USPS, mail carrier walking all day, audio books really make my day seems shorter
they all made it as if you were right in the front row of a show, they were so real.
Betty Jean, and her sisters, cause I could use some old school, down to earth, without beating around the bush advice myself.
yes, this was an excellent book, I want to give Terry Mcmillan kudo's for her great imagination and skill in writing she is one of my favorite writers. BUT PLEASE LEAVE NARRATING TO THE PROFESSIONALS, (I'm sorry) but you should NEVER do this again, you are a writer, your voice is not???, I don't know how to put it without being rude, so let's just keep it as it is. Just keep writing, and I'll keep buying. Again GREAT BOOK.
I have listened to this book 3 times. Everytime the characters keep me in stitches. This book reminds me sooo much of many of my friends lives. Felica Rashad, and Terry McMillan, is hilarious and makes the character so life like. This book, has something for everyone, you cry, you laugh, you say some unchristen like things, and much more. It is well worth listening to. I'm soo glad I purhcased the audible instead of reading the book. But then, "Who Asked you" (laughing) Enjoy
The fact that BJ (Betty Jean) got another chance at happiness for herself, despite all the challenges she faced. The fact that Omar finally got self confidence and became a man and told his mother he was gay, and I laughed so hard, I nearly got in trouble at work, but I'm glad she found out the way she did. Justice, for her being soo overprotective with her child, and thinking she was all that. Life knocks you down, but love and prayer together overcomes everything, when you activate faith not fear. And even though BJ was not into church, she definitely had faith. We all need it.
Emotions, emotions, that took my imagination there ini the story. I found myself looking through the window, of each of their lives.
Got cha, and who asked you anyway
Everyone should go out and purhcase it today. The rating is very close to beating my 5 star rating for 'Waiting to Exhale". Terry knocked this one out of the park. I hope a film, is on the horizon. It'll be well received.
I love to read books but I think I've found a new passion Audio Books. I love Urban Fiction as well as self help books.
It was so down to earth. It was like real life. Like my life.
Betty Jean!!! She is my mom. Everything about her is my mom. My mom is raising her two grandchildren. She has some of the same struggles as Betty Jean.
When Luther read the letter to Betty Jean. I couldn't stop crying....
When Betty Jean lost her daughter.. That was hard for her!
I LOVED this! Once again Ms. McMillan pulls out all the stops! suprising at every turn...and once again I cried due to a unexpected but not suprising turn of events. like "a day late and a dollar short" this is a grabber! Thanks Ms. Terry...and keep them coming girl!
This is the best audio book thus far. I think Terry McMillan, did a outstanding job. The characters,I could personally relate to. I even cried, when her sister finally came to herself and admitted, why she was the way she was.
Betty jean=Phylicia Rashad. I hope I spelled her name correctly. She really made this book come to life for me.
Betty Jean she seems like a "best girlfriend" I enjoyed her. I felt as if I could tell Betty anything and she had the ear to be truthful but not to judgemental.
Wife and mother of three, I've enjoyed reading since I was a child. I REALLY enjoy audible books because it allows me to multitask.
This is what is called a "Good Story". It's def somebody's story that you know, GET IT!
Conversational voice, I like that...Ms. Rashad was EXCELLENT!
The death, the boys gratitude....
This book is one of the best books that I've listened to in AA fiction. It was so good that I logged on to rate it, which is something that I have rarely done.
The pace of the reading was perfect, the characters was awesome and the story was easy to follow. It was like I was actually able to envision the entire story while listening.
The feeling behind the characters... they bring the characters to life through the reading... the feeling and emotions.
Absolutely, I felt like I was sitting watching my family. Ms. Rashad voice is as beautiful as she is. I find myself missing the characters and wanting more.
I love stories set in places I know so speaking about Los Angeles and naming streets nd landmarks I get the feeling that I am part of the story line.
I enjoyed them all however I really want to hear Ms. Rashad or more books.
How BJ got her grove back LOLGranny's love
McMillan is awesome her entire catalog is great and I am always glad to hear or read what she has available. And she is still fine love a good looking black woman.
I loved listening to Phylicia Rashad narrating this book! I could absolutely picture her as Betty Jean. The story line was good also. One of my favorite Terry McMillan books.
Betty Jean was my favorite character.
I loved listening to Phylicia Rashad. She was very believable.
The Collins Group
Yes. I am sure the print would have been excellent; however, with this type of book, nothing better than a talented writer and excellent performers-- which are made for the character's part. Each of these performers were five star quality, and you could envision each unique character within each setting.
I had purchased the book; however, had to drive from West Palm Beach, FL to Amelia Island, FL (south to north) and from there to North Carolina---could not wait to start so purchased the audio for my road trip. I had to buy the audio, as could not wait--have read all Terry McMillan's books and when I listened to the audio sample - I knew this would be the ideal book to listen to on my iPod for the long trip.
It exceeded all my expectations and more. Turned out, it rained the entire two days of travel and I did not even mind, as I laughed out loud at all the funny characters and it made the time go by faster. I actually finished the entire book about an hour before I reached my destination. I could not even listen to another book, as wanted to just bask in the wonder of this incredible book and smile as I wanted to meet each one of these characters.
I loved all the many different characters! My favorite character was BJ, and of course the banter with her sisters and oh did I love Luther, Omar, and Quinten. It was hard to choose a favorite as each of them had a take away.
If you love humor, wit, family drama- this book is for you. Movie worthy and can only image the cast! Tyler Perry needs to be all over this on OWN. Would definitely listen to this again!
The real emotions, the humor, life stories with heart felt takeaway. Will make you cry and laugh. Shows how much impression adults make on children.
Loved them all but BJ, Omar, Luther, Vanessa and Quinten were my favorites.
Luther as he is smart and is an old soul with a heart of gold. I also would like Omar and Quinten as both of them would make me laugh all night! Hard to choose as all the women were sassy and witty.
One of the best books - Terry you outdid yourself! I see another movie based on this book!
