Publisher's summary

MaryJanice Davidson's cult hit Undead and

Unwed is a delightful mixture of Sex and the City and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Waking up in a tacky coffin and wearing off-brand shoes, Betsy Taylor can't believe the horrible turn her life has taken; then she discovers she's a vampire. Soon, Betsy becomes a participant in a power struggle between the forces of darkness. With only her friend Jessica and the hunky vampire Sinclair to help her, this new "Queen of Vampires" will have a tough time getting her afterlife straight.

"Sexy, steamy, and laugh-out-loud funny, Davidson's chick-lit foray into the paranormal is delightful." (Booklist)

Classic MJD

This is a classic MaryJanice Davidson series. Her quasi-spoof of the vampire genre is full of the humor she is known for. If you like Sandra Hill, etc.... Wu does a decent job with the self-centered Betsy & co.

I downloaded this to take on vacation because it sounded funny and I liked the voice of the reader. It was so much fun to listen to. It made the flights fly by.

Just plain fun!

This was my first MaryJanice Davidson novel and the first time I've heard Nancy Wu read. I only downloaded the first book of the series to see if I would like it. I am the type of "reader" that can "watch the story" as it is read to me by the narrator. This was a fun story with a wonderful narrator. Nancy Wu's comidic timing was perfect with the characters and she really made it easy to "see" the story in my head. I found myself laughing out loud several times and thoroughly enjoyed the book. So much so that I came back and downloaded the rest of the series! :-) I am looking forward to seeing the Queen rule her "people".

Surprisingly smart, well crafted, and funny

So a friend of mine with impeccable taste recommended I get this one. And at the beginning of the book, I thought I knew what I was in for. I just figured the main character is a cartoon, and this book is going to be some stupid fun.

In particular, I really like the way she subverted the vampiric magnetism trope and played it so awkwardly. And the setup was great, even though some of the pop culture and political references felt dated.

About half way through the book, I realized the author, this whole time had been TROLLING me! Leading me into this false sense of security about both the story and her own abilities as a writer. And she did it so perfectly, pulling in character development and history, as well as expertly crafted capture and fight scenes. The pool scene at the end was freaking brilliant, and I wanted more.

It's a surprisingly good listen.
A well-crafted story with solid voice acting.

Bravo.

A fun twist on the vampire trend.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, probably. The story is fun and different than the usual vampire fiction.

Did Nancy Wu do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

The voices were fine - differentiating wasn't difficult, but I did find there were a lot more extraneous noises (page turning, heavy breathing, etc) than are typical in most audiobook recordings.

So funny!

I love this series. Yes, Betsy is a narcissist, however, she's hilarious! Take this series for what it is, a comedy romance. I've listened to this series multiple times and still laugh every time I listen!

ok book, but could have been read better

at the end of the story, I ended up loving Betsy Taylor, her stubborn-ness and fluff is just a girl after my heart.

although I enjoyed the book, i think the part that made me unlike the book in the beginning was the narrator and how she did the voices. Sometimes she did not keep the distinction between what the character said and what was thought. It seemed like sometimes she'd use eric's voice to do some of betsy's inner monologue....and that was confusing.

I guess mostly I'm just upset that this book wasn't narrated as well as what i'm used to, otherwise, i think the story was just fine.

even though i dislike how it's read, i'm willing to give her another chance, and listen to book two...it might get better.

narrator is horrid, but book is good

I read this series a few years ago. I was enthralled! I finally decided to take the leap to audio and give this version a chance. It's sad, so sad that the narrator didn't read the books first to better understand the authors view of the characters. the voices sound nothing like how they should. really ruins the sex appeal of the story.
