Publisher's summary

Imagine answering your cell phone one day to a male voice that gives you three minutes to confess your sin. If you don't, the madman, Slater, will blow your car to smithereens. You barely manage to exit heavy traffic and ditch the car when, precisely three minutes later, your car blows sky high. The media and police descend on the scene; your world has just changed forever.

So begins the nightmare that grows with progressively higher stakes. There's another phone call, another riddle. The cycle will not stop until the world discovers the secret of your sin, but you don't have a clue what that sin is. If not for Jennifer, the brilliant FBI agent working to corner Slater, you would indeed go mad.

Spellbinding!

I can count the number of books on one hand that I literally could not put down. I have listened to this straight through while working in my shop. Ted Dekker is absolutely amazing in his storytelling. It was as if I was watching a movie. Everything was clear and concise and completely enthralling! Not only was the story so amazing, the storyteller did a terrific job! I believe the reason it was so easy to see the story in my head was because his portrayal of each character was delivered so well!

Not my favorite of Teds

I usually love love love his books. This one - I was just ready for it to be over. Creative story, yes. However, I was more annoyed towards the end than anything else. He kinda gave it away too early what was going to happen. Spoiler: I was upset that Sam wasn't real, that was the only thing unexpected. It was definitely a creative way to depict the struggle between the good and evil in oneself. But overall, I was not super interested or impressed with this book. There were some holes in the story I was left confused about at the end. The dictation of the "evil" character was most annoying to me, and the narrator was only okay.

Outstanding!

Riveting story, superb performance! What a great illustration of the Christian's struggle of the spirit and the flesh. This is Ted Dekker at his best!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! This book held my attention from start to end. The plot is exciting and the ending was totally unexpected. Am going to listen to the whole thing again in light of the ending!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kevin.

Have you listened to any of Rob Lamont’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but he is an amazing narrator! Very impressed with him - way better than some others I have heard since joining Audible.

Magnificent Story

I noticed this story when it was the featured sale audio here. I had never read/listened to anything by Dekker before. But, when I learned this story had been made into a movie I got it that day and spent every possible moment listening to it. I thought the story was magnificent and well crafted. I'm pretty good at figuring things out, but I couldn't figure out who the "bad guy" was until just before it was revealed.

At first I thought this was just another good adventurous story that had some Christian characters in it. But, then by the end of it I felt Dekker had created an even more remarkable story about the sinful nature of all humans that made perfect sense without being preachy.
