"One would expect the son of Mel Brooks to have a genetic predisposition to humor, and indeed, he does, and he exhibits it relentlessly here." (Publishers Weekly)
Looking for complex, believable characters, an engaging storyline, and good narration! Fan of sci-fi, fantasy, adventure, and horror.
This book does read like a non-fiction survival guide with lists of information that sometimes droned on for me. It tended to be a little dry. I enjoyed it, but zoned out for portions of the book. Parts that I found the most interesting involved descriptions of the safest buildings to hole up in during a zombie siege. I do find myself looking at buildings and comparing their safety value now. I also liked the descriptions of "real" zombie attacks throughout history. I am glad I listened and I know that every time I watch a zombie movie now, I will be thinking things like, "That chainsaw is not a very practical weapon, considering its weight...."
Audiobooks makes my 10+hour commutes every week alot more bearable. :)
The detail put into pretty much everything, survivaltech, gear, backstory, etc.
World war z, another book by max brooks
Some contradictions in the book, ex, a zombie cant climb a ladder but an anchorchain.. And in one chapter animals have no problem eating dead zombies as in all the other chapters they avoid necrotic flesh.. But, small things in the whole!
This book is an excellent listen.
The reader is great, but I wish it would hav been read by max brooks instead, he was good in WWZ
The idea is somewhat funny. But in reality the detailed descriptions of how to evade/survive a zombie conflict is like listening to...well...a guide. I also had issues with some of the writers logic. Zombies can't climb, but they can climb hand over hand up an anchor line...
Definite must read! Great book, and great narrator! So much useful information, great listen for a long car ride, will keep you on your toes the entire trip!
World War Z was so good that I went ahead and bought this even though the reviews were iffy. I can't even finish it because it is so boring. It is like listening to someone read a dictionary. Maybe this is interesting reading in book form, but it is a stinker of an audiobook.
Nothing to write home about the narrator does a decent job but seeing as this is quite literally a survival guide there isn't much to work with or to challenge the narrator. An entertaining and surprisingly in depth survey of how to survive before during and after a zombie apocalypse, if you're a horror fan there's a lot to like here but be aware that it's somewhat dry material.
There need to be many, many more books like this one. I am so happy that the Zombie genre has belatedly started gaining on the teen vampire genre. My wife watched Buffy, reads Twilight and enjoys True Blood. Vampires are complicated, emotional and there is all that sex and teenaged angst mixed in.
Zombies are simple; they like brains. They want to eat yours. There is no Edward, no Sookie no Angel, just brains. If you like apocalyptic fiction, this is a great use of an Audible Credit.
Very well though out and put together in a fun way. Got a little dry at times, but if you are a zombie story fan, it is a must.
On level 5 of Robot Hell
I love Max Brook and his work. That being said, the Zombie Guide while good just doesn't lend itself to audiobook form in my opinion. The material is stellar, the narration excellent but it just doesn't feel right. Buy World War Z, its one of the best audiobooks on Audible!
max brooks is one of the best zombie explanitors (I think I just made up a word) That I have ever read from. He really goes in depth on this; although his impression of zombies are not the resident evil type monsters under bed looking zombies, nor are they the I am legend type. It brings me back to the dawn of the dead seres from the 70's; the slow moving zombies puts fear into anyone, and forces you to come up with a new strategy to survive.
