Rupert and his American lover, Allan, were an important part of her new, exciting life, so when Rupert suggested to her that she and Allan should get married to keep Allan in the country, Milly didn't hesitate. Ten years later, Milly is a very different person and engaged to Simon - who is wealthy, serious, and believes her to be perfect. Milly's secret history is locked away so securely she has almost persuaded herself that it doesn't exist - until, only four days before her elaborate wedding.

To have and to hold takes on a whole new meaning when one bride's past catches up with her and bring the present crashing down. With her trademark style of keen insight and razor sharp wit, Madeleine Wickham introduces her fanatical fan-base, plus a host of new listeners, to a fresh and irresistible heroine in The Wedding Girl.

    "Entertaining fluffy listen"

This book did exactly what I wanted it to do - give me a fluffy listen over vacation. It was pretty engaging, amusing, and ultimately satisfying. I have not craved listening to it again -yet.
But it's good to know it is in my library if I want to be amused again on another long drive or vacation.

"Narrator is great story is okay"

The narration of this story was great but I was a little disappointed with the book itself. I have read every Maddam Wickam and Sophie Kinsella book, and this one is missing the wit and humor to it. It's not horrible but it's not great either.

    "Excellent Listen"

Great character acting - a fun, interesting story. The characters become very real. Feel like a great play. Nice to have a classic story told so well. I highly recommend it. A top listen.

    "More Substance Than You're Expecting"

One of the things I liked most about this book was that you get to see the main characters when they are young, foolish, and care-free, and then ten years later when the demands of adulthood have all but suppressed their spirit. I also liked that while it's told in third-person, it moves from one character to another--so there is more than one protagonist.

This is one of those books where everything does not work out perfectly for the various characters. Wickham brings much more to the chick-lit genre than you'll find in your average romance novel. In fact, there are a couple of points in the novel when you might even get a little misty :)

    "vacuous characters"

Do you remember how self absorbed Bridget Jones' mother was? This plot has a whole book of them. The protagonist is irritatingly clueless and devoid of ambition. She is a British Barbie doll. She does grow, and eventually she awakens to a more truthful self, but it is a tedious journey. She is also surrounded by equally vacant characters who are excruciatingly self delusional. The group reads a little like an English sit com, abounding with stereotypes. I had to force myself to finish the book. Not a one of them was mature, or strong, or, well, likeable.

    "Narration a deal breaker"

I could not finish the second chapter of this book. The narrator's delivery comes across as harsh and angry, no matter what the scene or character(s). Cannot force myself to continue, which is saying a lot since I'm in the midst of a lengthy trip. Too bad.

Great characters, funny and touching chaos. Great underlying message about honesty in relationships and being true to yourself. I found myself rooting for all of the characters to overcome their challenges.

Hi all. I'm in my 50's (that's relevant, i think), and I favor fiction. I like the british sensibility, and was introduced to the Forsyte Saga through audible ... loved it! I happen to also like Chinese writers, but they are not well represented yet at audible. Looking to follow readers with similar tastes ...

I liked this book ... it reminded me of Catherine Alliott, and would appeal to young and old(er). Good narration. Well worth the credit!

    "Eh..."
Would you try another book from Madeleine Wickham and/or Katherine Kellgren?

    Perhaps.

Did The Wedding Girl inspire you to do anything?

It inspired me to daydream...This books lost me about 5 mins in. I found myself daydreaming about winning the lottery after passing a MegaMillions billboard on the interstate. I even backed the track up and tried to get into it again, but I just couldn't. Maybe it was the narrator or maybe it was the story. Maybe it was my brain on that day, who knows.

    Any additional comments?

It seemed like the summary about the book that I read before buying made it up to be better than it was. I finally gave up on it at Chapter 3.
