The delicious new romantic novel: now a No. 2 Sunday Times hardback bestseller
When Josh Strachan, newly returned to his home in north Cornwall from sunny California, first meets Sophie Wells, he's immediately smitten.
Sophie's pretty, she's funny, she has lots of friends, and she clearly loves her job as a photographer, despite the sometimes tricky clients. There's just one problem: Sophie has very firmly turned her back on love.
It's nothing personal, she tells Josh, but she just doesn't do dates. And no one - even Sophie's scatty best friend Tula - will tell him why.
Josh is sure Sophie likes him, though, and he's just got to find out what's put her off romance. And then put things right....

I am a total audiobook addict! I travel quite a bit for work and listen to them while I drive. Always searching for a good author to follow
Josh - he was just lovely
She did a great job with all of the characters
This is a great story and a very easy listen. It had a dew twists that I didn't predict. I was sad when it finished because I enjoyed it so much
Its an weird thing but my favourite genre to read is murder/mystery books but when it comes to audio books, I love ChicLit! Odd I know!
Great read - Sophie is a photographer and has moved to Cornwall to set up her own business. She catches the eye of Josh who co-owns a local hotel with his grandmother Dot. Sophie however has vowed to stay away from relationships ie Josh to which I had to find out why!!
Then there is Sophie’s best friend Tula, Josh’s fun loving friend Riley, Dot and her ex-husband Lawrence, and local author Marguerite. All have their own sub-plots and dramas which are perfectly woven throughout the story.
Its an enjoyable read/listen to
"Pleasant, relaxing read/listen."
Yes it was. It took me a little while to get into (not sure if that was me, or the book). When I did though, I found it to be a really pleasant story with very likeable, well drawn characters. Its a perfect holiday read.
Yes, I look forward to it.
I don't know, but she narrated it beautifully.
"Hugely enjoyable chick lit"
Yes it is predictable, cliche ridden chick lit, but if you fancy an escapist listen with a seaside setting this is perfect. Of course, I knew where the story was going from the beginning but there were a couple of surprises along the way and this was a very easy and enjoyable listen with likeable characters. This is the first time I have listened to Jane Collingwood narrate for many years. In the past I have found her tone rather grating but I thought she narrated this book perfectly with excellent differentiation between all the characters.
"Couldn't turn it off!!!"
It was well presented with a strong storyline. Loved the side stories, even if parts were predictable, it was enjoyable listening to them unravel!
Tula -she was written as a genuinely sweet girl, optimistic and happy!
Absolutely, it makes the housework fun!! This book had me hooked from the beginning, fantastic characters and fantastic writing, you won't be disappointed, Jill mansell has done it again :0))
"An interesting list of characters & there stories"
For me it is as I listen in bed at night with the light off
Tula She is fun. Sophie can be a bit wet in need of a shake
Jane a has a great range of believable accents. She is great at characterisation
We get there eventualy
I would recommend this story to those you enjoy a chick lit romp
Horrid book about men who cannot take no for an answer and women who are devoid of anything resembling a personality.
The main love story centres on Josh and Sophie. After she tells him again and again that she does not want to date him, he ignores her refusal and goes digging into her past. Not what I'd call romantic. His blatant disregard for her privacy and his continual pestering of her (because she MUST love him, in spite of the fact that she said NO over and over) made me uncomfortable.
There are several side plots as well. Tula and Riley's story was the closest I got to actually enjoying the book, but even they fell short. There's something very shallow about the way that one panned out. Again, I felt uncomfortable. And the older generation wasn't any better. At first, I thought it was nice to see a love story featuring older people included. Unfortunately, the participants made me roll my eyes at every turn. Really disappointed.
Bland prose, flat characters, contrived situations, and nothing at all "unpredictable." I recommend avoiding this one. I've heard that Jill Mansell's other books are better, but I can't say I'll be giving her a second chance.
"Unfortunately very predictable...!"
I felt like I knew what was coming at every step - for a book with "unpredictable" in the title I feel cheated!
I will step away from the chick lit!
Jane Collingwood did make a good effort to differentiate between characters, and I think her "Josh" was probably the best. I could happily have scratched Tula's eyes out though -what an annoying high pitched brummie accent!!
I am not sure what purpose Josh's grandmother had, except as a way of introducing Josh to St Carys and the hotel.
I normally enjoy and devour Jill Mansell books, but this felt too predictable, too churned out and too many stereotypes chucked about - Riley the blond and impossible gorgeous surfer dude (who has an intelligent and soft side which he keeps well hidden?), and the pop band (so trite as characters I can't remember any of their names or what purpose they served)...
"Light weight escapism"
The storyline was predictable, and the characters were stereotyped
Not really - they are good fun for a bit of lightweight escapism
The male characters all sounded about 14 which was not in character at all!
No - I would wait for it to come on to TV, but then I might watch it!
"Predictable consequences of love..."
not at all. i like silly novels but this one was a bit too much of a happy ending.. and very predictable.
not that i remember, but the reading was fine.
"A big disappointment"
I have listened to and read other books by Jill Mansell and, though not great, they were enjoyable. This book was both saccharin and very predictable and I was pushed to finish it.
