Publisher's summary

Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier. But for some reason, he can’t shake the feeling that something strange is in the air this year. Something waiting in the darkness. Something wicked...

It comes to them in the night. An unexpected intruder, stumbling upon their campsite like a wild animal. He is shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry - a man in unspeakable torment who exposes Tim and the boys to something far more frightening than any ghost story. Within his body is a bioengineered nightmare, a horror that spreads faster than fear. One by one, the boys will do things no person could ever imagine.

And so it begins. An agonizing weekend in the wilderness. A harrowing struggle for survival. No possible escape from the elements, the infected...or one another.

Disturbing

This was a disturbingly horrifying book. I wasn’t scared, I cringed a good part of the time while listening to it.

The detail in which the author described what the kids were seeing and hearing was cringe worthy. The voice actor had an amazingly creepy voice that made the story even better.

Overall this was a great book. I was drawn into the story much like I was while reading Stephen King’s It. You wanted to be there with the boys and be friends with them.

Very good, don't listen of youre squeamish.

It took me a little bit to get into in the beginning I think because the narrator. However once I was able to get into it and pay solid attention it really is a good book and story. Probably the only audio book in my entire life where I gasped out loud and said things like "Oh my F****** God" . I'm not easily grossed out, but the author's incredible details made me put my lunch down a few times. 9/10 reccomend

Great listen!

If you loved "Lord of the flies" then you must listen. Just a little more morbid.

I liked it!

I'm always down for a good Creature Feature and this was a fun (albeit disgusting) story! Lots of people will not like this story (lots of unpalatable scenes take place and it may be too horrific for some), but if you are a horror connoisseur, you'll find it has some merit, and ticks all the trope boxes. I gave it 4 stars because it portrayed scientists and labs in a negative light, that I found unfair to the field.

Body horror at its finest

I went in expecting to feel uncomfortable, to squirm at the graphic details. I was not disappointed.

Zzzzzz..so NoT scary or thrilling

If you scream-ish about gross things you may like this ,when it comes to being scary or having any kind of spooky atmosphere this will be a let down. I found myself uttering sound of disgust twice and going “la la la la “ when it was poor kitty’s turn.

kept me interested

I wasn't sure about this one after reading many reviews. I just said do it and I'm not mad about it at all, yes there was animal abuse some I feel was unnecessary but when your trying to get across what the writer was trying to it makes sense.

overall it reminded me of dreamcatcher but I didn't hate it. kept me intrigued and unsure and satisfied.

Terrifying!

Such a great old-style horror story, well written, well performed! Retro Stephen King
style.

Brutal

I had to take constant break with this book not because I didn’t like it : but because it was so gut wrenching and intense. Right from the start I felt the vivid details. When things really got crazy , the details and imagines really stayed in my mind.

The narration was amazing and how he was describing the effect it had on each camper : framer me out. I heard they are making this into a movie / show and I am looking forward to it

Also some scenes will make you queasy so I suggest not eat while listening

GOOD UNIQUE STORY

Only reason I didn’t give a 5 on the Story was bc the chapters in the beginning of the book of the boys going off on their own we’re a bit boring (not to mention not at all like real scouting esp with rules) and I almost returned the book. But once past those, wow, good story.
