Publisher's summary

Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Amazing book!

The narrator did a great job on this one. He pretty much perfectly represented the different characters in this book( with Jack being his best) absolute masterpiece of narration. Not to mention the fact that this is just a classic incredible novel. One of my favorite Stephen King novels I have ever read, matched only by It

Terrifyingly Timeless

Steven King welcomes the reader and the Torrance family into the opulent Overlook Hotel with few reservations. However, the seasons change rapidly after the guests and staff have departed. Leaving the Torrance family alone, trapped by the wicked winter weather and the evil locked inside The Overlook.
I’ve seen the movie many times. The book filled the gaps when scenes in the movie left me frustrated. The characters were dynamic and believable. Steven King is a masterful storyteller!

Human Monsters

Loved how the real horror of The Shining comes from the realness of the Torrance family. A few bad decisions and leaning into vice can really lay a man low, and any man who has had an addiction to fear could relate with some of Jack’s story

Loved this book!

There’s a lot of heart in the story. The characters deal with very real fears and stressors. You care about each of them as they progress through the story. The narrator did an amazing job with each characters voice, bringing them to life very easily.

The emotion and imitation of the characters that the reader had was impeccable.

I thoroughly enjoyed the way the book was read. The reader seemed to get every emotion across without struggle. The story was amazing. Action, pain, sorrow, and many more were included in the plot. I’ve been putting this one off for a while and now regret not getting to it sooner. Highly recommend for an entertaining listen!

If you have just seen the movie get ready for a true story

My partner is a huge Stephen King fan and we recently watched The Shining and throughout the movie he kept mentioning that there is just so much missing. I've been wanting to read the book for a long time, and finally had a good reason to. He wasn't kidding. It's a completely different story and definitely filled in some of the blanks that I had in the story. Such a great read. It's a must.
