Publisher's summary

Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

IDK WTF Kubrick read before making his movie but..

Wow, what a book.
Scariest horror book I've ever read (or listened). I cannot believe how different this is from the movie. So much better.
I am not one of those "Mr. King can do no wrong" guys. I think some of the things he has written are kind of plainly written, but this is a masterful piece of art.
Look, I know he has become one of the worst things a person can become.....a (ugh) liberal, but try to look past that.

Absolutely wonderful!

I love all of Stephen King's books! He has a way of putting you there! Excitement, fear, worry and heart felt sentiments, it's all here!

Campbell Scott is a fantastic narrator! He knows just when to give his voice the dramatic flair, the pitch or the fearful growls that keeps each character separate and clearly gives then personality!

Good Thriller Read

Super entertaining and easy to tear through. Wish I would have read it before watching the movie though- I could only picture Jack Torrence as Jack Nicholson. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a thriller.

Terrific

This book is one of King’s best imo. Campbell Scott does a really great job on narration too. Big thumbs up

Different but Better?!?

The Shining explained by King that the movie by Kubrick couldn’t or wouldn’t. Better but Different!?!

Lackluster Performance

I did not care for the narrator’s almost flat affect and am perplexed by the choice. The story, however, shone through (see what I did there?) and I was captivated.

Quality production

Awesome production of a Stephen King classic. The reader managed to strike a tone that was both creepy and suspenseful without becoming a melodramatic distraction. Very well done.
