Publisher's summary

Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Stephen King Forever

I love this book, I have read this book about 5 times, so when I saw it on audible and thought let's see what the voice does for the story, since it was not the one I made in my mind. It was wonderful, I fell in love with the book all over again! So much better than I thought it would be!

Rereading after 15 years

I first read The Shining as a teenager, already a fan of King, Kuntz, and the like. I remember loving it then, and then I saw the movie and loved it for different reasons all together. Rereading the novel again shows just why King hates the movie. the mood and themes are very different, and hearing the character's thoughts is very important in a psychological, slow burner like The Shining. It's really a masterpiece.
The voice performance is good, but takes a couple hours to get used to. The performer had a very subtle, yet effective, way of switching between voices, and keeps a quiet intensity throughout, sometimes letting loose for the scary moments, making then all the more terrifying.
overall, a great retread!

A classic come to life

If you could sum up The Shining in three words, what would they be?

The Shining is an enduring classic and this audio book brings it to life. A "page turner" that you can "read" even when driving! The narrator really picked up the subtle changes in characters and psyche, conveying happiness and horror with ease.
Even after all these years Stephen Kings thrilling nightmare come to page, still sends shivers down your spine.

Amazing!

This was my first audiobook and I absolutely loved it! The book was so creepy. I caught myself often saying "Ewww!" because of the amazing attention to detail during the scary parts. There were some nights it was difficult to sleep after some of the scary parts because oh how amazing of a writer Stephen King is, his attention to detail, describing what the scene looks like, it just comes to life in your imagination. Campbell Scott is an amazing narrator, he gets into all of Stephen Kings characters, you know which character is talking because he changes his voice. I can't wait to listen to my next Stephen King book: Dr. Sleep. And I would love to find more books narrated by Campbell Scott.

Loved it!

I already knew that the book was great going through the reviews, but together with the amazing narration I believe this was one of the best audiobook products I have purchased so far. I suggest you play it on 1.25 speeds .First few minutes might sound hurried, but your brain will soon synch with the speed.

Wow

I read this from a 100 book bucket list. I tried to read a different King book and stopped less than halfway. I’ve seen the movie multiple time but was not prepared for this. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey in madness! The characters were well developed and the story enthralling. Unlike some of his other stories, this has a great ending!
Would enthusiastically recommend this book!
