Publisher's summary

England, 1959: Laurel Nicolson is 16 years old, dreaming alone in her childhood tree house during a family celebration at their home, Green Acres Farm. She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and then observes her mother, Dorothy, speaking to him. And then she witnesses a crime.

Fifty years later, Laurel is a successful and well-regarded actress, living in London. She returns to Green Acres for Dorothy’s 90th birthday and finds herself overwhelmed by memories and questions she has not thought about for decades. She decides to find out the truth about the events of that summer day and lay to rest her own feelings of guilt. One photograph, of her mother and a woman Laurel has never met, called Vivian, is her first clue.

The Secret Keeper explores longings and dreams, the lengths some people go to fulfill them, and the strange consequences they sometimes have. It is a story of lovers, friends, dreamers and schemers, play-acting, and deception told against a backdrop of events that changed the world.

Great mystery expertly told

This was a great story with characters you could both relate to and care about. Told in stages, this story kept me wanting to keep listening the entire time. While the mystery was the driving force of the story, it wasn't necessarily the most important part. Relationships and choices are common threads woven throughout this tale, causing readers to examine parallels between characters and themselves. It wasn't one of those mysteries where you get to the end and you think, "How was I supposed to figure that out?" Kate Morton lead the readers to put the pieces together while the characters were still searching for clues. Lovely story of love, loss, and discovery.

Beautiful and intriguing

This book is slow to start and I nearly gave up in the first hour but by then I'd been slowly taken in by the characters. I was sorry to reach the end. It's a story of love, in all it's complicated forms. Well worth a listen, especially if you enjoy stories set in WW2.

Amazing book!

This book is full of mystery. I never expected any of the twists and turns in this book and I can usually figure part of a good mystery. Great book!

Great listen!

This was my first audiobook besides Harry Potter, so I was nervous to not listen to something read by Jim Dale! The narration turned out to be great, and I loved the slight accents for the characters that fit perfectly with their descriptions. The story was engaging and intriguing, and I found myself listening constantly, especially near the end! I ended up speeding up the pace to 2x faster near the end because I HAD to know what would happen. I did not predict the major plot twist (I usually do) and really enjoyed this book!

A wonderful story

This book was more than I expected. So many things that I did not expect the narrator was the perfect fit for the book.

Great narrator and character development

It started a little slowly but I think that it was important for the development of the characters. Good story about second chances and a glimpse into how circumstances can shape our decisions.
