This book has it all! It's Action! Drama! Comedy! Romance! And best of all, Historical Fiction. It is a story of a man who tested and tried religion and then accepted faith. But in the mean time he is faced with trials, danger, and love. All of it cast beautifully in the Roman empire. It is not another testiment of the Bible so much as the telling of one man's journey to acceptance of Christianity in the time immediately following the death of Jesus. Anyone, could relate to the main characters of this story. I highly recommend it.
After listening to over 50 audio books, this is by far the best one yet, the narrator makes the voice of each character distinct and come to life. The book keeps moving at a very good pace and keeps you on the edge of your seat, while adding enough color to make you feel each scene. You won't want it to end. My mother read this book back in high school in the early 60's and said it was always one of her favorites. Can't believe I never read it before. The author must have done his homework well, to have colored the novel as accurately as he did. You will not be disapointed with this one. I saw the movie many years ago and it was good. But, they couldn't make a 20+ hour movie, so of course you miss most of the story.
This book was recommended to me as the favorite book of my husband’s grandfather who is an incredible man. My mother also said it was one of her favorites, well I haven’t even finished it yet, I have about 8 hours left, but I still want to write a review. This book has moved me. When I listen to it I feel at peace and it is a sweet spiritual journey that has allowed me to get another perspective on the life of Christ. Everyone should read this book. Even when I am not listening to it I am constantly thinking about it. This book will stay with you forever I believe, and I haven’t even finished it yet. I can't wait to continue to learn from it. This is worth every second of your time. Experience the journey The Robe has to offer.
It does take some time for the story to grab your complete attention but once it has....it is just best to pray for a sick day so you can stay at home and listen. The main players in this tale will become close friends. You will cheer, weep and love right along with them. Marcellus is the kind of person we all wish to become. This book is timeless, a true work of art.
This book was so enjoyable. Yes, it was a little slow getting started, and at first the names were a little difficult to keep straight, but once you get past the first few minutes the story just overwhelms you and it is almost impossible to stop listening to! If you have a huge project at work or a paper due at school don't start listening to this or you'll be in trouble with the other.
Obviously, it is the story of the robe Jesus wore during His passion and that the Roman soldiers cast lots over. It is a story of how various people came to know and make a decision about just who Jesus is. The writing is just superb and even though it is REALLY long you just don't want it to end. One of the best books I have ever downloaded and I've bought over 200 from audible.com alone!
This is a thought-provoking book about the origins of Christianity. It brings to life questions and doubts that still arise today, addressing them with the fascinating premise of a Roman--a Roman who crucified Christ--trying to learn about Jesus in the period just after his death and resurrection. The slow conversion of Marcellus is beautifully told. The book is well-written for the most part (with the minor, but annoying-to-the-point-of-funny overuse of the verb "to saunter." Way too many characters saunter way too often. My son and I listened to this book together, and although we enjoyed it immensely, we found ourselves laughing every time some character sauntered here or there.) The narrator does a fine job as well.
This is one of the most enjoyable books I've heard in a while. The story is engaging and has the best elements of historical fiction set in the Roman world. You won't regret listening to this fine story!
I'm a little over a third done with this book and am very confused over all of the rave reviews. The story sounded interesting and unique and based on the reviews, I decided to get it. So far I'm disappointed. The narrator is painful to listen to... he doesn't even pause when the action shifts to a new location or the perspective shifts to another character so it is sometimes difficult to follow. There is very little action and a whole lot of repetitiveness. I'm sticking it out but not looking forward to it.
This is a wonderful story. If you ever wondered what happened to the Roman soldiers after they Crucified Jesus, This story will give you something to think about. And the Narrator was great, his change in voice for the different charactors and his accent was very compelling.
I would very much recommend this book to anyone who wants to imagine what the Roman Soldiers went through that Crucified Jesus. Or just wants a really exciting listen.
