Publisher's Summary

The third novel in The Forgotten Legion trilogy takes the main protagonists from North Africa back to Rome in the build-up to the assassination of Julius Caesar.

Having survived the perils of a journey across half the world, Romulus and Tarquinius are press-ganged into the legions, which are under imminent threat of annihilation by the Egyptians. Meanwhile in Rome, Romulus's twin sister Fabiola lives in fear for her life, loved by Brutus, but wooed by Marcus Antonius, his deadly enemy. Soon after, Romulus fights at Zela, the vicious battle where Caesar famously said, 'Veni, vidi, vici'. Tarquinius, separated from Romulus in the chaos of war, hides in Alexandria, searching for guidance. But mortal danger awaits them both. From the battlefields of Asia Minor and North Africa, to the lawless streets of Rome and the gladiator arena, they face death daily, until on the Ides of March, the twins are reunited and must decide either to back or to betray Caesar on his day of destiny.

    "Excellent book with great narrator"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Road to Rome to be better than the print version?

    Impossible to say

Have you listened to any of Michael Praed’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Michael Praed is one of the best narrators I have listened to

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

I have now read and listened to all the Ben Kane books as I think his style of writing is excellent - this along with mp's excellent narration makes it a pleasure to listen to

    "A fourth book please."

An excellent book couldn't wait to read it after first two novels, anxiously hoping for a fourth book in the series in the near future. Narrator Michael Praed was easy to listen to and not Americanized and fake.will definitely be listening to some more books narrated by Mr Praed.

    "Hurried ending"
What did you like best about The Road to Rome? What did you like least?

I think Michael Pread was an excellent choice as narrator. Silky voice excellent pronunciation. However, we went from the deeat of Scipio and other battles to Caesar's death too quickly. Its as if the second Gallic war, the defeat of Marcus Antonius and Cleopatra and finally the first forrays into Brittania were brushed over. It just felt that the author ran out of ideas in his haste to finish the story. I will read and listen again, but not a patch on Simon Scarrow. Well done all the same...thoroughly enjoyed all three audio books.

Has The Road to Rome put you off other books in this genre?

    Not at all. Love em.

Which character – as performed by Michael Praed – was your favourite?

I was disappointed that he couldn't keep a few characters going. But overall, I thought his depiction, maturing and ultimate opposites of the twins was very well done.

Do you think The Road to Rome needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Difficult. As mentioned before, there are a few campaigns and more politics that could have been involved for both twins. To finish the story with the twins having the ultimate realisation could have been enhanced, including Caesar accepting certain realities, without a unrealistic historical slant.

    Any additional comments?

Goodonya Ben Kane. I still think you should ressurect this story. The death of Ceasar brought interesting times to Rome and I still think you have ample room to fill in the gaps for the twins......including bringing back one or two characters........French, perhaps, and perhaps a slave girl in the Ludus???? What a fabulous story that would be especially if you include the twins and the haruspex!!!!
