Yet far below the black depths of the Pacific, a mysterious substance snakes through undiscovered fissures in the ocean floor, as nature itself seems to portend the terror to come.
Then, with the sudden, unexplained death of Michael's friend, a disturbing truth dawns: the corporation that is funding Katharine's dig has a far greater investment than she ever imagined - an investment in medical terror. And her son may be part of their hideous plan.

I managed to listen to the whole thing, but I found myself wishing it would be over about halfway through.
This was not, as implied, a supernatural story and I still have no idea what the titular "presence" was supposed to have been. Rather it was an awful attempt at a medical thriller a la Michael Crichton. Characters weren't developed at all and I found myself just not caring what happened. I have read and listened to a number of John Saul novels and generally like his work. Do yourself a favor and skip this one!
The male narrator did not do a good job with the female protagonist's dialog: he made her sound whiny and annoying. Likewise with the Hawaiian and Japanese accents.
The characters were a bit predictable, but that made it easier to think about the plot. I enjoyed the surprises!
Another excellent John Saul..... Can't get enough of his imagination!!!
I'm so glad there are so many more of his books "out there"
Thank you Audible.com!!!!
I used to read John Saul and all I remember are ghostly stories about children. Been quite a while obviously. Since this was written in 1997 I believe I'll have to see what's happening with him now. This one reminded me of the early James Rollins for some reason. It does have that element of "Don't open that door!" When I read only I had to creep through those pages but now I've incororated the thrill of vocalizing, "DON'T!!!" Scared my family to death in the beginning but now they just ignore me with an occasional "Duh, Mom."
I must say usually the back drop of a story is of little interest to me. In this story however it plays a pivotal role. I liked the clean family fun thrill. I liked the characters especially the juvenile delinquent wannabe who is trying to cope with an abusive drunk parent. Little science so I could simply sit back and enjoy the ability of the narrator.
All in alvl a good Saturday afternoon read/listen and everything one would expect from Saul.
Yes beautiful excitng descprition made you feel like you were right there
Yes good character development excitement never boring
When they were fleeing the helicopter
What a fab story this was just a ordinary mother and son going to the tropic climate to witness a dig. This is far more than a dig though, and the whole thing turns into a total nightmare ,i could not put this book down, its got such a twist its not what you think either!!!
