    Story
"Forgiveness is the Theme. . .and That's No Mystery"

This is a relatively short book, thankfully. I found myself liking, then disliking it; mostly because the "mystery" was so transparent that there really was no mystery. The characters and events were so ordinary, predictable and scripted! Still I kept listening, just to find out how the adventure concluded.

Part of me wanted to believe that this is really a true account of a true story. The setting is WWII in the Gulf Coast area of Orange Beach, which was then a sparsely populated beach front community of fishermen and laborers. History records that there were German submarines in the Gulf, causing mayhem with US shipping via the Merchant Marines. But could a German submariner who is injured leave his sub and survive a harrowing swim through the shark-infested waters of the Gulf and end up on the beach, where he is found by a woman grieving the loss of her husband to the Nazi war machine?

If the story is true, it is an amazing wartime tale. That part I liked. What began to get prickly was the way the author pounded away at definitions and acts of forgiveness. . .over and over again. Every character in the book presented at least one long soliloquy on the topic, to the point of redundancy.

Three stars. . .that's the best I can do. It's not a bad book, just not a great one.

    Story
"You cant go wrong with a book by Andy Andrews!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Most definitely! Andy Andrews has yet to publish a book that was anything less than stellar! His perspective on life is something everyone could benefit from hearing about!

What does Andy Andrews bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Andy reading the book himself brings tremendous value. The highs and lows, and various voice inflections really adds to the listening experience!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

If an Andy Andews book does make you both laugh and cry, then you may not be human!

    Story
    "Never would have guessed"
Where does The Heart Mender rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was a fascinating and captivating story. I would rank this among the top 5 books I have listened to.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Heart Mender?

When Joseph spoke of his family and what had become of them the detail and emotion was unlike any I have experienced in an audio book or in any book to date.

Have you listened to any of Andy Andrews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have now listened to three of Any Andrews's books and with each one I am fascinated, captivated, enriched, and completely immersed in the story. Each time I complete I book by Andy I think I have found my favorite; however, that thought is challenged when I begin the next book by him. This book had a different quality than the last two I listened to by painting the story so perfectly it made you want to be in that time and in that place. I can not rank Andy's books that I've listened to but this one had a different feel to it then The Noticer & The Noticer Returns in that it was more graphic, more detailed, more vivid. The style of writing fit this story just as the style of the Noticer books had their unique styles and fit that story.

If you could take any character from The Heart Mender out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Joesph: he is so patient, kind, composed and well mannered during such a terrible experience. I would like to have him on my board of directors to learn from him.

    Any additional comments?

This is not a story I would normally choose to purchase or listen to. The history that makes this story possible is not something I am normally drawn to or something that would normally keep my attention. The energy and spirit in which it was delivered was powerful and captivating in a way I could have never have imagined. The phrase don't judge a book by it's cover has proven to be such a blessing for me. I'm grateful Andy wrote this book and even more grateful I found it.
