Bio for Joanna Brady I admire gutsy women, and they figure in both of my novels. When I moved to Key West, I read an article about the U.S. Coast Guard naming a cutter after Barbara Mabrity. She had tended the Key West Lighthouse in the early part of the 19th century, a job she inherited from her husband when he died of yellow fever. I became fascinated by the idea of writing Miss Barbara's biography. There was no information about her, so I did what any enterprising writer would do: I fictionalized her life, which was very liberating. I could weave an exciting tale about her, full of twists and turns. I called it "The Woman at the Light.” The novel touches on the early Key West of wreckers, pirates, privateers, and cigar makers. There are also some insights on slavery--very important when a runaway slave makes his way to the lighthouse. It was published by St. Martin's Griffin in 2012. My new novel, "Night Witch in Berlin" is a story about another courageous woman, a Russian 'night witch' the name given the young women--some of them teenagers--who bombed the Nazi-held territories at night during WWII. The perils that assail her during that war are many and exciting to read about. But most of the story takes place after the war, in 1947 Berlin. A new kind of war--the Cold War--and new types of fear haunt her, mostly from other Russians. The book is about the choices she must make, and the journey that leads her finally to Key West. While the story is fictional, she is a composite of many very real women who served in combat during WWII for Russia. My husband and I still live in Key West, but we have a little stone cottage in a secluded medieval village in the Southwest of France, where we spend the summers. It’s peaceful; we don’t even have a TV. Perfect for catching up on our reading—and of course, writing.
