Publisher's summary

You are now leaving the age of Aquarius please lower your seat when rising from your head.

It was something to do with the cycles of history. The way great civilizations rise and fall. Golden ages and dark ages. Things of that nature.

Few people noticed at first. The changes. They were subtle to begin with. Like when the Leader of the Opposition challenged the PM to step outside and settle things man to man. And the PM agreed. Or the way the baked ham rose up against Dave while he was standing in the check-out queue at Budgens. Small things. But they just kept getting bigger.

And by the time everyone realized that something very strange was going on, it was all too late.

The Earth had left behind the age of science and reason and moved once more into a time of myth. A time of legend and heroes. Of romance and wizardry and wonder.

It was a time to take the mother of all giant leaps and enter The Garden of Unearthly Delights

A riot of a story

Not everyone‘s taste. You have to listen and follow well but the reward for doing so is enormous.
Robert Rankin is an excellent narrator of his work. He never misses a beat.
Loved every moment of this first wacky adventure in to Mr Rankin’s work

Zany

This is a great yarn. Fun and funny adventure. There's a meta element too...some cynical humor... even a bit of adult humor. It's a bit of everything. Don't read it for meaningful exploration of our society; don't expect the plot to be water tight. This is all about escaping from reality, having a bit of a chuckle, and every once in awhile enjoying a sentence or paragraph that you find particularly clever!

This is why I have appreciated audible's new approach to memberships. I've given authors a chance because a book is included with my membership. I would read another of this author's works.

one if his better

One of his better works. Always just enough going on to keep me interested and coming back to see what happened next. More fanciful in outlay than any of the previous of his works I have seen to date. Worth a read, but try to get it on sale.

Not my cup of tea

At times it was almost funny, but to tacky al cliche;
It just tries to hard to be funny, absurd and it just fails miserably.
Main character is a douche, secondary characters same or worse.
There is no real story here, just an ill mashed up string of nonsense.

On the other hand the audio part of the book is pretty well made.

Maybe it was just not what I expected, maybe it just wasn't my thing.
I will certainly read something more from the author, and then decide if it was just a one time thing with this book or if its the writing style that is not for me.

Hilarious

Rankin’s word play and bone dry humor is absolutely great. It’s all very British, so if you don’t go for that sort of thing, go for something else. Personally, this story had me belly laughing more than once. Absolutely goofy and completely pointless, this story was the wonderful escape I needed. If you’re looking for break from more serious titles, or just a breathe of much needed fresh air from the global dumpster fire, this is it.

Funny

Much like listening to a Monte Python movie in book form. I kept trying to decide who would play each of the characters

Flight of fancy

We all need a great escape from reality every now and then, this is definitely that.

Very good, twisty story. Unique plot.

I enjoyed the winding path of this story. I wasn’t blindsided by every twist but enough of them to keep things moving enjoyable along. The plot was fresh, but with a comfortable level of genre tropes.

LOL!

What a fun ride! Fans of English comedy will surely enjoy this. Well done. Also the author does a fantastic job of narration.... I wonder if that's just because he is British.

Could have been good.

Perfect book for those who like all male characters, lots of penis jokes, and females reduced down to only being objects.
