Publisher's summary

The year is 1771. Claire Randall is still an outlander, out of place and out of time. But now she is linked by love to her only anchor: Jamie Fraser. They have crossed oceans and centuries to build a life together in North Carolina. But tensions, both ancient and recent, threaten members of their clan.

Knowing that his wife has the gift of prophecy, James must believe Claire, though he would prefer not to. Claire has shared a dreadful truth: there will, without a doubt, be a war. Her knowledge of the oncoming revolution is a flickering torch that may light his way through perilous years ahead - or ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes.

disappointing

What disappointed you about The Fiery Cross?

no story no plot. nothing of interest to follow.
Having read another of the series, I thought Claire to be a strong, no-nonsense, get-it-done type of character but in this reading, she comes across as an unbearably obsequious old lady.

What character would you cut from The Fiery Cross?

Briana and Roger as they are utterly pointless.

Worth continuing the series

Great big exhaustive books, this series is LONG. This one is number 5 in a series of, I think it's up to 8 by now. So why keep reading? Gabaldon is a fabulous author. She must be to hold anyone's attention that long. Yes, there are times that I feel like I have "read that already," but she has a way of creating twists in the plot that just keep you going. I am not a series kind of reader. Just don't want to commit to that much time. But I didn't know this was a series until I had read/listened to the first one, my favorite so far, btw (It was my first Audible book). I will finish the series, but not all at once. I probably won't get around to #6 until next summer. But I'll look forward to it then.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars as a story and overall is because it is just so long. And the repetitious nature of certain things, like the "love making." I mean, really, 5 times in a 36 hour period? And these people are nearing 50? My brain just can't handle that.

As always, Davina Porter's narration is as good as it gets. She is part of the magic in this series.

History with little science fiction

This book goes into detail about what life was like in 1770. If you are looking for a long rambling fiction book about a family living in early America this is the book for you. This is NOT the book for you fyou are interested in how someone going back in time can make changes that will change history or pass medical knowledge to others. The main character is a woman doctor that has traveled back in time to be with her lover / husband and is always wishing that she had access to modern medicine to cure people. I have listened to parts 1-3 and will finish the book but only listen when I am doing something else. Missing a few pages or a chapter is no loss.

FINALLY!!

I couldn't wait until this unabridged book came out, so I bought the actual book and read it with Davina Porter's brilliant performance voice in my head!

So just today, when I saw that The Fiery Cross is finally available, I snapped it up!

Okay, Okay, I haven't even listened to it yet, but who cares? I know it's wonderful and I will totally enjoy hearing what I already read.

Thank you, Audible!

I'm not mad, just disappointe-- no, wait I am mad.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Any sort of plot progress...character development...action. Something.

Would you ever listen to anything by Diana Gabaldon again?

I've been through 5 books so far, I do want to finish the series but this has put me off it for at least another year or two.

How could the performance have been better?

Davina Porter is great, her voice is a bit older but that's to be expected.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Frustration. Lots of mundane, little situations that lead to big "OMFG WHAT?!" situations that end in nothing. No progress in the overall series' story or any real character development. It felt like I was waisting time rather than immersing me in the story. I realised I was disappointed 1/3 the way through but by the end I was mad. I've never been mad about reading a book in my life.

All fluff and filler

To be fair, everyone said you had to "get through" this book to move along - and boy were they right. This is just pure fluff and flowers..... so many times I caught myself saying... just shut up and move along. Too wordy, too fluffy, too boring. This was torture - but needed to continue with the series where Diana does pick it up and get back to what made the previous novels such a great listen. BTW - Davina Porter NEVER falters - she has done an amazing job.

Grand ~ !

This book is back to the grand read of the initial books in the series. The author continues to intrigue us with Jamie and Clair and other characters, although I must say their daughter Brianna and her husband Roger are among my least favorite. I find Brianna annoying, and Roger neutral at best, but it is a great series and worth the investment.

Worst book in the series

I was bored with this book from page one. It's a 55 hour book and after suffering through 40 hours of it, patiently waiting for it to finally grab me, I had finally had enough and deleted the book without listening to the final 15 hours. Completely self-indulgent work by the author, because she gives so many tiny little details of every single characters day, that no one but herself could possibly care about. If she had just edited all the references to Jamie wiping his nose on his sleeve she could have cut the book down to 53 hours. And take out 99% of the details on Briana's bulging breast-feeding breasts and now we'd be down to 45 hours. Nothing was interesting, and most of it was completely irrelevant. I loved all the previous books though. This one was just not for me.

GREAT!

I listen to an average of 100 books a year, and the Outlander books are some of my most favorite! I find myself going back and listening (they have to be fantastic for me to want to re-listen) time and again. Davina Porter does a brilliant job with the narration!
