Publisher's Summary

The year is 1771. Claire Randall is still an outlander, out of place and out of time. But now she is linked by love to her only anchor: Jamie Fraser. They have crossed oceans and centuries to build a life together in North Carolina. But tensions, both ancient and recent, threaten members of their clan.

Knowing that his wife has the gift of prophecy, James must believe Claire, though he would prefer not to. Claire has shared a dreadful truth: there will, without a doubt, be a war. Her knowledge of the oncoming revolution is a flickering torch that may light his way through perilous years ahead - or ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes.

    "This one's all about Roger"

So hopefully this is the last time I have to blame my pos Samsung Galaxy S4 for being the absolutely worst phone on the face of the planet!!!! I mean, in a review at least….for a while… But yes, sadly, I made several notes for my review and after listening for 44 plus hours, I’ve lost every last audible bookmark/note. It is common knowledge that SD cards can and do corrupt, but the Samsung Galaxy S4 has an insatiable taste for SD cards, 8gigs, 16 gigs, 32 gigs… it can never get enough. BUYER BEWARE!!!
Okay, so this book is ridiculously long. It is well researched to the point of being tedious, but I love this series so much I don’t care how tedious it gets. I do miss the intense relationship between Jamie and Claire. Jamie and Claire are basically in a holding pattern for the majority of this book. They are cursed with the burden of knowing the future and because of this, they are constantly on the lookout for signs that the American Revolution is beginning. I, too, was waiting. Waiting for the good parts. Are there good parts? It’s Diana Gabaldon, so heck yes there are! Does it balance out the book and make up for the tedious (I refuse to call it “boring”) parts? For the average reader, probably not. For the dedicated Outlander fans, I’d say yes. In this book, we get to know Roger even better. The more times I read this series, the more I like Roger. Brianna, on the other hand is always a little hard for me to connect with. I read a comment from a reader online that described Brianna as a girl torn between 2 worlds and 2 fathers. Sometime I think she is even torn between the two men in her life, little Jemmy and Roger. This made me sort of understand Brianna a little better. But mainly, to me, this book is about Roger. Roger, who has risked everything to come to this world and be with Brianna, suffers even greater treachery in this installment. I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone, but all I can say is Roger’s own greatest skill, the one Jamie Fraser does not really know how to value, music, is brutally ripped from his life. I feel for Roger so much in this book. This is actually as far as I have read in the series. I am anxious to know how much more Diana Gabaldon will subject poor wee Roger Mac to. As for Jamie and Claire’s story, I really felt like they were on the backburner for most of this book. I’ve heard tell that book #6 focuses back to their story and I so hope that’s true. Also, give me more of young Ian!

    "Least Enjoyed of the Series"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    I can't answer this question.

What was most disappointing about Diana Gabaldon’s story?

I am disappointed because the book is 'short' on story, and 'long' on her attempts of ribald writing meant I'm sure to stimulate the senses. The book is also peppered with many unduly long and discriptive passages about things like vomiting -- please. We get the idea.

What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I find the book distasteful compared to the others in this Outlander series. I actually prefer the read book, because I can - and have FREQUENTLY - pressed the icon to move to the next chapter - and skip whats left in the chapter I'm on. This is the FIRST book I've done that with - typically, I've hung on every word, and would never fast forward on the others in the series, as I do with this one.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Not yet.

    Any additional comments?

I have a few parts to go. I'm hanging in to see if the very feeble storyline improves and gives me a reason to buy/listen to the next and last book in the series.

    "Grand ~ !"

This book is back to the grand read of the initial books in the series. The author continues to intrigue us with Jamie and Clair and other characters, although I must say their daughter Brianna and her husband Roger are among my least favorite. I find Brianna annoying, and Roger neutral at best, but it is a great series and worth the investment.

    "Death is in the details"

The Outlander was a masterpiece in historical fiction with a touch of science fiction thrown in (time travel) that raced along on a merry adventure. Sadly, in her subsequent books, Gabaldon seems to be trying to drown her readers in volumes of minutia.

Listening to The Fiery Cross is painful - there is simply too much detail (I don't care about every tiny thought the characters have!) and the story moves too slowly.

A certain level of detail of daily life in the time period is engaging, but when it interferes with the progression of the characters and brings all adventure to a halt, I become frustrated and quit.

I slogged through 4 of 7 parts and I may be done...I may skip ahead to part 7 to see how this book wraps up. I can do that, knowing I likely will not have missed anything of substance in between.

    "I too was waiting..."

....for Ms. Porter's lovely voice to continue this series. It was so great to read everyone's (very bad) opinion of the abridged edition, and to thus avoid it! I waited, and am so glad I did: Claire and Jamie together again with Ms. Porter's divine voice playing all the parts so well. Thank you much for putting it out there as soon as was available through Recorded Books (which no longer sends out books to reader; what is it about that?). I'm still not finished, but it's a great ride so far!!

    "Thank YOU!!!!"

I had checked this audiobook via Interlibrary Loan from my local library (who had to get it from another state for the record), because the Unabridged Version was not available at the time (seemed like forever!). So, Thank You SOOO MUCH for being so extremely prompt about putting this out here for us as soon as you could!!! I use Audible through my Kindle, and I'm a happy reader/listener. Verra Happy!

    "GREAT!"

I listen to an average of 100 books a year, and the Outlander books are some of my most favorite! I find myself going back and listening (they have to be fantastic for me to want to re-listen) time and again. Davina Porter does a brilliant job with the narration!

Finally here this version with the great voice of Davina Porter!! I am so happy. Her voice makes the whole book come to live, especcially when you have listened to the first four outlander books. Now just waiting for 'breath of snow and ashes' with Davina Porter! Please Audible....

What made the experience of listening to The Fiery Cross the most enjoyable?

The narrator is very good, sometimes I find myself having the same experience like reading the book for myself, the scenes folding out right before my eyes, perfectly and vividly described, and delivered.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fiery Cross?

i haven't quite finished yet, but the happenings at the wedding are great.

Have you listened to any of Davina Porter’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to the previous Gabaldon books and she is good as ever, she plays well with her voice.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    The plot thickens

    "Boring"
Would you try another book written by Diana Gabaldon or narrated by Davina Porter?

I started listening to these books after watching the outlander series. The first book was good, although i do not think i would have carried on with the series had i not watched it on TV. Now on Book 5 i have given up. I persevered through the last few books as i wanted to know what happened to Jamie and Clare. I now am not interested. The story lines are getting more and more far fetched and there seems to be parts of the story that are introduced and are left hanging with no explanation. She may be picking them back up later but it doesn't seem so. Very badly written and although i know the author is american but the English that is used in parts in terrible. Will not waste anymore credits on this.
