Publisher's Summary

In the days before the Civil War, there lived in New Orleans the gens de couleur libre - copper-skinned half-castes, liberated by their "owners," but confined by their color to a life of political non-existence and social subordination. Still, an aristocracy would emerge in this society: artists, poets and musicians, plantation owners, scientists, and craftsmen whose talents and reputations would extend far beyond the limits of their small world. Best selling author Anne Rice's probing, lyrical style sweeps you into their midst as she introduces Marcel, the sensitive, blue-eyed scholar; Marie, his breathtakingly beautiful sister, whose curse is to pass for white; Christophe, novelist and teacher, the idol of all young gens; and stunning Anna Bella, whose allure for the well-to-do white man would become legend. Here is a compelling and richly textured tale of a people forever caught in the shadows between black and white.

    "Feast of All Saints"

Again, I give this work one star because it is not possible to do this book any justice in a 3 hour time period. It was my fault for not checking to see if it was abridged or unabridged, however, take the time to read the whole book instead of listening to this farce of a book.

    "Is three hours enough?"

I listened to this book because my book club selected it. I was intrigued with the characters in the story and the period of history it explores and the performance was very good. Typically, I purchase unabridged book versions but that was not available. Since it was only three hours long, I wonder what all we missed. I feel like I bought the cliff notes and I don't know how I would feel about reading the entire book. Would it be too slow and boring or would it give us more insight into the lives and struggles of our characters?

    "Chopped up too much!"
Would you try another book from Anne Rice and/or Courtney B. Vance?

    Yes I would

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Feast of All Saints?

It was way too short to really tell the story!

How could the performance have been better?

I need the read the unabridged version of this story. With the way it is chopped up now it doesn't make much sense. Please get the unabridged version. Courtney B. Vance can still read it, but at least give him a chance to do justice to the story.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Yes indeed! I have read the book and seen the mini series. It was fantastic both times. This version is just too short to do the story justice.

    Any additional comments?

I would love to listen to a full version of the reading of this book.

"Way too abridged! Such a fantastic voice."

The story was hard to follow but the voice acting was really amazing. Wish they had a full version.

"Not bad for an abridged version"
    Any additional comments?

Of all of the Anne Rice's novel's this is one of my favorites! The New Orleans of the 1820s comes alive in this story of young people of all walks of life and their rites of passage into adulthood. Particularly the tragic social life of the Gender de Colours of New Orleans.
