Howard Fast again brings to life a cast of characters whose lives become a portrait of their time. Listeners will witness the events in the lives of the children of Dan Lavette. Follow daughter Barbara Lavette, a strong and magnetic personality, from tragedy to final fulfillment; observe the elder son, Tom, as he quests for and finally succumbs to his own unscrupulous drive for power; and feel the conflict as the younger son, Joe, struggles between dedication to his medical work to the poor and having no emotional strength left for his beautiful wife left alone.

Story
This is a love story of great beauty and great tenderness, the kind of love story that entangles the listener in the lives of the characters, so that after the story is over, one continues to live with those characters. And fortunately, the listener will not have to say farewell to these characters, since it is the first in a series that will tell the story of three Californian families over the course of the 20th century.

Story
With its brilliant and brutal portrayal of the Corleone family, The Godfather burned its way into our national consciousness. This unforgettable saga of crime and corruption, passion and loyalty continues to stand the test of time, as the definitive novel of the Mafia underworld. A #1 New York Times bestseller in 1969, Mario Puzo's epic was turned into the incomparable film of the same name, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It is the original classic that has been often imitated, but never matched.

Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Story
One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. The struggle for personal integrity in a world that values conformity above creativity is powerfully illustrated through three characters: Howard Roarke, a genius; Gail Wynand, a newspaper mogul and self-made millionaire; and Dominique Francon, a devastating beauty.

Love the weaving together of historical places and events into the lives of the characters.
This book continues a series I love with characters with realistic personalities and issues woven together with the world of 40s and 50s America. It’s simply told but also expertly crafted.

the chipmunks narrated this story...
Good story, but the narrator in vocalizing the male characters made them sound like chipmunks... Almost made made me give it up. Otherwise a good continuation of the story...

A female narrator impersonating men
What disappointed you about The Establishment?
Another good Howard Fast yarn, but the narration of The Establishment is terrible. Correction: the narration is pretty good, by the same narrator that did Second Generation. But in that audiobook each character had his or her respective actor or actress for all the voices. That was great! I use Whyspersinc and actually preferred listening to reading because of this. But on this audio book, the same female narrator tries almost humorously (good call by other reviewer saying it sounds like chipmunks) doing the supposedly he-man voice of Dan Lavette and all the other male characters. It's beyond distracting.
