Publisher's summary

All good things must come to an end, Constant Listener, and not even Stephen King can write a story that goes on forever. The tale of Roland Deschain's relentless quest for the Dark Tower has, the author fears, sorely tried the patience of those who have followed it from its earliest chapters. But attend to it a while longer, if it pleases you, for this volume is the last, and often the last things are best.

Roland's ka-tet remains intact, though scattered over wheres and whens. Susannah-Mia has been carried from the Dixie Pig (in the summer of 1999) to a birthing room (really a chamber of horrors) in Thunderclap's Fedic Station; Jake and Father Callahan, with Oy between them, have entered the restaurant on Lex and 61st with weapons drawn, little knowing how numerous and noxious are their foes. Roland and Eddie are with John Cullum in Maine, in 1977, looking for the site on Turtleback Lane where "walk-ins" have been often seen. They want desperately to get back to the others, to Susannah especially, and yet they have come to realize that the world they need to escape is the only one that matters.

Thus the audiobook opens, like a door to the uttermost reaches of Stephen King's imagination. You've come this far. Come a little farther. Come all the way. The sound you hear may be the slamming of the door behind you. Welcome to The Dark Tower.

Set in a world of extraordinary circumstances, filled with stunning visual imagery and unforgettable characters, The Dark Tower series is unlike anything you've ever heard. Here is Stephen King's most visionary piece of storytelling, a magical mix of fantasy and horror that may well be his crowning achievement. Don't miss the other volumes of Stephen King's The Dark Tower.

Critic reviews

"A pilgrimage that began with one lone man's quest to save multiple worlds from chaos and destruction unfolds into a tale of epic proportions....a closer look at the brilliant complexity of his Dark Tower world should explain why this bestselling author has finally been recognized for his contribution to the contemporary literary canon. With the conclusion of this tale...King has certainly reached the top of his game." (Publishers Weekly)

It's Finally Over

I don't usually like to read series because I feel tied down to them. Stephen King, though, gives me that urge to see-what-happens-next that is what makes me a book junkie. It did take me a while to start this last volume after devouring the first six, and I have to say it wasn't the best part of the story, but I did enjoy it. Even the ending wasn't too bad (I find King's endings to be his weakness) because I didn't expect it to end the way it did. I took it to be a happy ending, and I like those, but it also had some sadness to it from my perspective, or at least some bitter-sweetness. As usual, I cared about those characters (what I find to be King's strength) and I didn't want to say good-bye to them. Pretty good series all in all.

George Guidall is one of the all-time best narrators, and I love listening to him. This series was started by Frank Muller, though, and I have to say I missed him when the series was switched over to Guidall. I think everyone who has heard Muller read misses him. It sucks that he died so inconveniently at the height of his career. He was truly amazing.

Hard to Say Goodbye to Roland

I loved reading (listening to) the series. It was easy to listen to. The narrators were absolutely perfect. I loved the pictures that were created in my mind of the Ka Yet! It's hard to finish the series. I feel really lonely, but there so many books I've been wanting to read . . .

Don't take my word...experience this one yourself!

If you could sum up The Dark Tower in three words, what would they be?

Read Before Dying!

What did you like best about this story?

From the first word in book one, to the last word in book seven the story never failed to draw me into Roland's world and hold me spellbound! I earned the marathon badge listening to this book.

What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?

George Guidall has the perfect voice, inflection and intonation for a story with a western slant. Through his voice you felt the arid landscape of the desert, the dust and desolation of Roland's world, and the mind-boggling wonder at Roland's first taste of Coke!

If you could take any character from The Dark Tower out to dinner, who would it be and why?

A toss-up between Jake and Eddie, but I guess Jake wins out.The depth of his love for Roland and his willingness to die more than once made his special to me.

Any additional comments?

This is one story I hope never makes it to the screen. It has to be experienced as written and envisioned by the author, with nothing omitted, and no Hollywoodization of the plot, characters, or storyline. The Gunslinger saga is one of the reasons books will never die.

Groundhog Eternity

,Anyone who can write 7 vols. of fiction and emerge with a satisfying ending deserves praise. Of course you have to read the addendum and CODA to get this feeling. You get the feeling that King would much rather just stop and leave the rest to the reader's imagination. After all, endings are somewhat artificial. King explores themes such as loyalty and obssession, the latter to be something to be cautious about. There's really too much to talk about. There's the interesting colloquial speech of Middle Earth. And, again, in this vol King puts the brakes on the grotesque simile. I could be wrong, but I think it's only vol 3 where King cuts loose with those..oh, and King here breaks the illusion by putting himself in the book (e.g. Do we rake the Tower first or make sure King writes about it first?) Hmm. Finally, my list of influences: Browning, Tokein, any Clint Eastwood Western, Car 54 Where are You?, a young Dirty Harry, the Wizard of Oz, and the late Hollywod writer, whose first big hit was about a superbug. Sorry, can't remember his name. He went to med school, but switched to writing. And a whole bunch of others. Just so you know, I'm getting vol 7 mixed in w the others. Finally, all the novels are picaresque. I hope this helps.
