Publisher's summary

All good things must come to an end, Constant Listener, and not even Stephen King can write a story that goes on forever. The tale of Roland Deschain's relentless quest for the Dark Tower has, the author fears, sorely tried the patience of those who have followed it from its earliest chapters. But attend to it a while longer, if it pleases you, for this volume is the last, and often the last things are best.

Roland's ka-tet remains intact, though scattered over wheres and whens. Susannah-Mia has been carried from the Dixie Pig (in the summer of 1999) to a birthing room (really a chamber of horrors) in Thunderclap's Fedic Station; Jake and Father Callahan, with Oy between them, have entered the restaurant on Lex and 61st with weapons drawn, little knowing how numerous and noxious are their foes. Roland and Eddie are with John Cullum in Maine, in 1977, looking for the site on Turtleback Lane where "walk-ins" have been often seen. They want desperately to get back to the others, to Susannah especially, and yet they have come to realize that the world they need to escape is the only one that matters.

Thus the audiobook opens, like a door to the uttermost reaches of Stephen King's imagination. You've come this far. Come a little farther. Come all the way. The sound you hear may be the slamming of the door behind you. Welcome to The Dark Tower.

Set in a world of extraordinary circumstances, filled with stunning visual imagery and unforgettable characters, The Dark Tower series is unlike anything you've ever heard. Here is Stephen King's most visionary piece of storytelling, a magical mix of fantasy and horror that may well be his crowning achievement. Don't miss the other volumes of Stephen King's The Dark Tower.

Critic reviews

"A pilgrimage that began with one lone man's quest to save multiple worlds from chaos and destruction unfolds into a tale of epic proportions....a closer look at the brilliant complexity of his Dark Tower world should explain why this bestselling author has finally been recognized for his contribution to the contemporary literary canon. With the conclusion of this tale...King has certainly reached the top of his game." (Publishers Weekly)

seem to read this in life changing moments

i finished this book the dat i proposed to my wife.
as i sit finishing it the second time, i can't help but wonder whats next in my wheel of ka?
i feel the deus ex machina ending for Susannah was forced, but isn't that the definition? seeing Eddie and Jake and Oy go so quickly hurt just as much this time as 13 years ago. i cannot wait to open that next door....

there are other worlds than these.

We were warned not to go any further. To accept the story where it ended we did not listen. We listen to the prologue and learned of Roland's fate. To relive his life not from the beginning but from the moment he chased a man in black across the sand. With No greater hope of an end but a horn that signals hope. We can surmise that the only way his story can end is to save the boy from falling. And what then does he continue to follow the man in black with his new son. Does he truly learn love before he has to pull Jake through the door. What then do they travel does Jake become a gunslinger in his own right. Does he draw Eddie and Susanna from that world. If he does is his heart already blossomed by then does he hold them higher than he does the tower. Do they still go on to save the people of the cala and then on to stop and free the breakers. Not to send them back along with little hope but to go back himself with them with his family immediately thus saving Eddie's life from a dying man's gun. Does he then open the door to save Stephen King's life is he then fast enough so that he and his son both live. Does he then return to the calah to live his life out with his family with a woman he finds love with the servant of a priest. Just like destiny like fate Stephen King is cruel and he is great. What else would you call cursing a man's mind to walk a thousand worlds in a million stories just to find a simple answer that's not so simple. For every story I read opens the door to a million other worlds realities outcomes. Because no matter what world we start in no matter what path we take the truth is simple and absolute. There are other worlds than these.

Stephen King's Magnum Opus Concluded

Wow, where do you start on a book like this? Let me just begin by saying I've listened to the entire Dark Tower series on Audible but this is the first one I've reviewed. I felt like I just couldn't give a good review until I finished the series.

Now that it's complete and I've had a day to absorb what I just read I feel like I'm ready to give my 2 cents.

First off, for those that haven't started the series yet, STOP READING and go back to the beginning! Believe me, this series is meant to be read spoiler free!

I will do my best not to spoil anything in my review though.

The book is narrated once again by Guidall and while no one in my humble opinion will match Muller (book 4 being, in my opinion, his masterpiece, his voice work was a thing of beauty), I feel as most others that Guidall was the only person fit to finish out the series.

The story itself is much more brutal and blunt then the rest of the series, but being the finale that's to be expected.

The quality of the writing is top notch Stephen King. The ending though...well, I'm still trying to absorb it.

I really can't be frustrated at King though. I think when you dedicate as much time as we do reading this series, no one can be satisfied with how it ends.

He even warns the reader near the end to just stop reading and be content with the previous chapter. But alas, we are human and we do as Ka wills. So of course I read on, and now suffer for it, say sorry.

Nothing else really needs to be said. I loved every moment in Mid World and End World and if you don't agree I cry your pardon. But if you've made it this far and are considering buying the last book just DO IT!

One more turn of the wheel.

Here we are folks. The end of the journey. It has been a long one and we say thankya. Roland and his Ka-yet quest forth to that obsidian obelisk that Roland Deschain, son of Steven, has pursued since the world began to move on. It has been a long journey and we all say thankya big big. Amazing read and arguably the best way to finish out a series. Long days and pleasant nights gunslingers.
