Publisher's summary

"The perfect summer read" (Booklist) from New York Times best-selling author Elin Hilderbrand: An intense tale of love and loyalty set against the backdrop of endless summer island life.

With rumors of infidelity straining Greg and Tess MacAvoy's marriage, the couple head out on their sailboat one early summer day to celebrate their wedding anniversary, hoping the roughest waters are behind them. But in an accident off Nantucket, they mysteriously drown, leaving behind two small children as well as three couples who have long been their closest friends. Tragedy brings to the surface long-simmering conflicts and emotions, and the MacAvoys' six grieving friends find themselves unprepared for the revelation of secret upon secret as they struggle to answer the question: What happened to Greg and Tess?

The Castaways probes the boundaries of friendship and forgiveness as it tells a page-turning story of passion, betrayal, and suspense, filled with the perfect details of summer island life that have made Elin Hilderbrand's novels beloved best sellers.

not impressed

I guess I have questions how people can call each other best friends when they are doing the spouse of someone they call a best friend. It was a struggle to keep engaged in the story but in the end I listened to the story just to find out whodunit. Sometimes the narrator seem engaged in the story but there were times she was monotone and sounding just as bored as the words she was reading.

The Castaways-Excellent Read

I loved this book and the narrator was really good as well, didn't get tired of her at all. She kept saying "Quay's" like k-ways where I come from that's said "Keys" I found myself yelling at my dashboard on the long commute home "Keys, it's Keys" but I'm not from Nantucket maybe that's how they say it there - all that aside, I really, really loved this book, great story, excellent characters - downloaded Barefoot right after. A Summer Affair was my first by this author and I didn't care for it but I'm glad I looked further and found this book

Don't cast away this one

Though initially I had a hard time sorting out who was married to whom, I really enjoyed this book. Well written, good story line, good narration. I was concerned that (like many a good book) the ending would be disappointing, but I'm happy to say that the author finished as strong as she started. A good listen.

Loved It!

A great story about great friends and the many different shapes of friendships/bonds. A feel good read worth the time. With so many dark secrets, the author does well in unfolding them a little at a time. Every ball that was thrown into the air is acknowledged at some point later allowing the storyline to layer nicely. I appreciated the narration and hearing the story in each character's perspective. Worth listening to!

I enjoyed this book... it was simple and easy but kept me interested until the end. I may even miss the characters.

Enjoyable

I liked the book and found it to be an enjoyable listen. The end was a bit anticlimactic but I frequently find Ms. Hilderbrand's books to be this way so it wasn't unexpected.

Disappointed

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I've enjoyed Elin's books so much, but this was a huge disappointment. It feels like it was written by a beginning journalist and was written in a hurry.

eh

What disappointed you about The Castaways?

I was expecting some sort of compelling storyline, like Elin Hilderbrand's other books. I listened for hours and hours and even when the book ended, I couldn't figure out what the point of it was.... There was no real conflict or resolution, just miserable cheating characters.

What could Elin Hilderbrand have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

too much to mention in this review.

Which character – as performed by Katie Hale – was your favorite?

I don't know.... perhaps Flynn and Chloe.... children aren't offensive like the other characters in the book.

What character would you cut from The Castaways?

all of them.
