Publisher's summary

A publishing event: number-one New York Times best-selling author Jan Karon returns - and invites her millions of fans to join her again in Mitford.

After five hectic years of retirement from Lord's Chapel, Father Tim Kavanagh returns with his wife, Cynthia, from a so-called pleasure trip to the land of his Irish ancestors. While glad to be at home in Mitford, something is definitely missing: a pulpit. But when he's offered one, he decides he doesn't want it. Maybe he's lost his passion.

His adopted son, Dooley, wrestles with his own passion - for the beautiful and gifted Lace Turner, and his vision to become a successful country vet. Dooley's brother, Sammy, still enraged by his mother's abandonment, destroys one of Father Tim's prized possessions. And Hope Murphy, owner of Happy Endings bookstore, struggles with the potential loss of her unborn child and her hard-won business.

All this as Wanda's Feel Good Cafe opens, a romance catches fire through an Internet word game, their former mayor hatches a reelection campaign to throw the bums out, and the weekly Muse poses a probing inquiry: Does Mitford still take care of its own?

Millions of fans will applaud the chance to spend time, once more, in the often comic and utterly human presence of Jan Karon's characters. Indeed, they have never been more sympathetic, bighearted, and engaging.

a story that is best when read again!

Treat yourself. Kindness and care wrapped into a story of two observant people in a town where everyone has a place. The greatest character is our God. He does not glare but instead glows.

Absolutely love Jan Karon's books

Gentle characters and loving and kind. Touch my heart in a way I've never been to touched by any other books. God's love is evident through out. I highly recommend all of Jan's books. I'm eager for the next one and will reread all the others.

Spoiler included

I enjoyed this book. Well read, does a good job of rounding out all the bits pieces of the series, checks in with all the interesting characters. What I was not so happy with -(stop reading here if you do not want to know something specific about the book) was being blindsided by a character's suicide attempt. Karon does address occasionally dark themes, but this was a rather intense scene to be listening to, I probably would not have had a problem reading it, but the first listen was a bit rough, partially due to how well the narrator performs these characters.

It's like a cup of tea with an old dear friend.

What did you love best about Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good?

I loved that it took place in Mitford where the series began with many of the same lovable characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Father Tim, of course. He is so full of wisdom and patience. His faithfulness is a beacon to all who know him. I love his expressions especially the "prayer that never fails" and "consider it done." Yet, his character is believable, not too good to be true. I guess he's a combination of people I know and love.

What about John McDonough’s performance did you like?

He is the perfect narrator for this series. I imagine Father Tim sounds just like him!

Who was the most memorable character of Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good and why?

Probably Sammy. Sammy's character is so hard and with much patience and love he softens just a little bit at a time. I hope there's another book so we can see what happens to Sammy.

Any additional comments?

Yes! Please write Book 11!!!!!!

A Much Awaited Volume

I heartily recommend to all Jan Karon fans. A great addition to the series. I was missing my Mitford friends and was so afraid I would not get another in the series. I re-read all the other volumes first, which made this listen even more special.
