Publisher's summary

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her... a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo's empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards... and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

Ending ruined the book

The ending of this book was so foolish after a relatively strong story line. What a shame

I cried

Being a survivor of domestic violence I identified. But what a lovely story with a beautiful ending. I am a big fan of Nicholas Sparks.

Safe Haven

I will start off by saying I thought I had made a mistake with this Narrator as she was such a Monotone Voice and sort of slow. It was not the speed as I checked. Then as the story got going her voice changed to be just wonderful. Told myself she is playing all these different parts, men, women and children. Right to the end it held me right on. The ending I felt was a little bit too long and descriptive, but it was a good finish.
This takes the reader down so many different shifts that I had to take a step back and realize the story has made a turn that I missed. Got used to this happening and then it was just fine.

Yes I will find my next Nicholas Spark story, but will take a pause and make a change to another early Amish family story that I do so enjoy. Like the different pace and learn so much of how they lived. Great Authors here that I follow.

Hard to digest the physical abuse

I picked the title because it sounded safe. I was dead wrong. I would put this book in a thriller category with love mixed in. It was very well written. The ex-husband was one messed guy. So glad he died. I loved how the book ended. It was a surprise.

This Was My First Nicolas Sparks Novel

I am not much into sappy love stories and this is what I expected when I decided to buy Safe Haven. I thought something easy on the ears would be a good choice to do housework by. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The characters had depth and substance and it wasn't pages and pages of verbal and physical love making. The twist at the end was enough to make me consider trying another Sparks novel. Recommended for the love story lovers as well as someone just interested in a good listen sans much sap.

Was pleasantly surprised

Have been finding Nicholas Sparks getting a little too predictable, but this story is a good one. I like his bit of mystery and suspense, and his surprise ending.

Excellence at it’s best.

This is such a beautiful written story. I would get caught up in the story forgetting my own life. I never wanted the story to end. I can only guess what happens to Alex and Katie. It would be great to have a continuation of the story.
